Chapter 3 - The Untouchable Empress

Back at St. Jude’s Hospital, the atmosphere in Room 402 was entirely different.
The door was locked from the inside. A private security guard—hired by James Vance using emergency corporate funds—stood post in the hallway, politely but firmly turning away any visitors who weren't authorized by Claire herself.
Claire sat propped up against the pillows, her laptop resting on a hospital tray table. On the screen, a live secure video feed streamed directly from the Mercer Logistics boardroom.
She watched in absolute silence as federal agents in crisp blue jackets placed handcuffs on Marcus Vance while Richard screamed obscenities, his face pressed against the mahogany table where he had ruled for decades.
There was no joy on Claire’s face, no triumphant smile. Just a deep, cold satisfaction—the feeling of a debt being collected with astronomical interest.
A soft knock sounded at the door.
“Come in,” Claire said.
The door opened just enough for James Vance to slip inside. He looked tired, his tie slightly loosened, but his eyes gleamed with professional triumph. He walked over to the bed and set a thick stack of certified legal documents on the tray table.
“The board has been lawfully dissolved under emergency protective statutes,” James reported, pulling up a chair. “Richard’s assets have been frozen by federal order. Every single bank account tied to his shell companies has been seized. By sunset today, neither Richard nor Evan will have access to a single dime of corporate or personal funds.”
Claire picked up a pen with her left hand, flipping through the pages of the asset recovery decree.
“And Evan?” Claire asked quietly.
“Evan is currently sitting in a holding room at the central precinct,” James replied. “When he arrived at the office this morning expecting to sign paperwork, federal marshals were waiting in his private office. He tried to resist arrest. That added a felony charge of assaulting an officer to his growing list of problems.”
Claire looked down at her right leg, encased in heavy white plaster. The throbbing ache beneath the cast was a constant reminder of the pain Evan had inflicted—the exact pain he thought would break her spirit.
“He thought breaking my leg would make me helpless,” Claire murmured, tracing the edge of the document with her thumb. “He forgot that empires aren't built with bones, James. They’re built with contracts.”
“Indeed they are,” James agreed. “The board emergency resolution also restores your full executive status as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. Effective immediately, you hold absolute operational control of Mercer Logistics. No one can touch you. Not Richard, not Evan, and certainly not Diane.”
Mention of Diane caused Claire’s eyes to narrow.
“Diane,” Claire repeated, a dangerous edge creeping into her voice. “Where is my dear mother-in-law?”
“She’s currently at the family estate on Oakridge Drive,” James said. “Packing her bags, likely. Without Richard’s accounts and Evan’s salary, their credit cards were declined at the jeweler’s downtown an hour ago. Word travels fast in high society. By tonight, everyone in the city will know the House of Mercer has crumbled.”
Claire closed the laptop with a soft snap. She looked out the hospital window, watching the distant skyline of the city where she had spent seven years working in the shadows while her husband took the applause.

“Tell me, James,” Claire said softly, turning back to her lawyer. “What happens when they realize they can’t even afford bail?”
“They’ll learn what it’s like to live in the real world,” James smiled thinly. “The world they thought they were immune to.”
