Chapter 8 - The Paternity Trap

The public maternal clinic in Iztapalapa smelled of floor wax, alcohol rub, and overcrowded misery.

Ximena sat on a hard plastic waiting chair in the basement corridor, staring blankly at the black electronic monitor strapped around her right ankle. The skin beneath the plastic strap was red, raw, and chafed from the friction of walking.

Every three hours, the device emitted a sharp, high-pitched chirp, reminding the state satellite network that the primary suspect in the *Vanguardia Capital* embezzlement ring had not fled her court-designated perimeter.

Beside her, Doña Teresa was pacing the narrow hallway like a caged animal.

The older woman looked unrecognizable. Her expensive silk dresses had been replaced by a cheap cotton sweater borrowed from her sister, and her once-immaculate hair was pulled into a messy ponytail revealing two inches of grey roots she couldn't afford to dye.

"Where is the doctor?" Teresa hissed, checking a cracked wristwatch. "We’ve been sitting here for four hours! If we were at the ABC Hospital in Santa Fe, the chief of obstetrics would have seen us in five minutes!"

"We don't have private insurance, Teresa," Ximena said, her voice dull, exhausted. "We don't have money for the bus fare home. Shut up."

"Don't you dare speak to me that way, you insolent little girl!" Teresa snapped, stepping into Ximena's personal space, her breath smelling of black coffee and cheap tobacco. "My son is rotting in a federal prison cell because of you! If you hadn't pushed him to make you a partner in that fake logistics company, he would still be living in Las Lomas!"

Ximena let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "Your son couldn't steal a pack of gum without getting caught! He spent the money on sports cars and your luxury lifestyle, and you know it! The only reason you're standing here with me right now is because you think this baby is your golden ticket to Valeria's trust fund!"

"This child carries the Mendoza blood!" Teresa hissed, tapping her chest. "He is Ricardo’s firstborn! When the criminal trial ends, the family courts will force that barren corporate monster to establish a child support trust! No judge in Mexico will allow a billionaire to let her ex-husband's child starve!"

The door to the examination room swung open.

A young, tired-looking obstetrician in a green coat stepped out holding a manila folder. "Ximena Morales?"

Ximena struggled to her feet, her hand pressing against the small of her aching back. Teresa immediately hurried behind her, pushing her way through the doorway before the doctor could close it.

"Are the results of the advanced prenatal panel ready, Doctor?" Teresa demanded, taking a seat beside the examination desk without being invited. "We need the complete medical certification for the family court magistrate. We need proof of gestational viability and genetic markers for the paternity ledger."

The doctor sat down behind his cluttered desk, put on his reading glasses, and opened the folder. He didn't look at Teresa. He looked straight at Ximena, his expression grave, professional, and slightly cautious.

"Señorita Morales," the doctor began, "we completed the comprehensive non-invasive prenatal screening we performed three days ago. The ultrasound shows the fetus is developing normally. It is a healthy male, twenty-six weeks gestation."

Teresa let out a loud, triumphant gasp, crossing herself three times. "A boy! A Mendoza boy! I told you! St. Jude never fails me!"

"However," the doctor continued, his voice dropping into a firmer, more deliberate cadence, "pursuant to the subpoena issued by the Federal Prosecutor's Office regarding your pre-trial release terms, we were also required to run a comparative genetic sequencing analysis against the DNA sample provided by the detainee, Ricardo Mendoza."

Ximena froze.

The color drained from her face so completely that the freckles across her nose stood out like ink spots on white paper. Her hands, which had been resting protectively over her belly, dropped into her lap like lead weights.

"Why would you need a genetic test?" Teresa asked, frowning, her eyes darting between the doctor and Ximena. "My son is the father! They were married in Cuernavaca!"

The doctor pushed a single-page laboratory report across the desk.

"The comparative genomic markers between the fetal DNA extracted from the maternal blood sample and the buccal swab provided by Señor Ricardo Mendoza show an exclusion rate of ninety-nine point nine-nine percent."

Silence slammed into the room like a freight train.

Teresa blinked. She picked up the paper, her eyes scanning the dense rows of numbers, alleles, and statistical probabilities. "What... what does this mean? What are you saying?"

"It means," the doctor explained cleanly, "that Ricardo Mendoza is not the biological father of this child. There is zero genetic correlation."

Teresa turned her head toward Ximena.

The older woman’s eyes were wide, bulging with a mixture of confusion, horror, and incandescent rage. Her lips began to tremble, spitting tiny flecks of saliva as she struggled to find her voice.

"You..." Teresa whispered, the sound rising into a deafening shriek that caused two nurses in the corridor to stop dead in their tracks. "You filthy, lying, gutter whore!"

"Teresa, wait—" Ximena began, backing her chair away, tears of panic finally breaking across her face.

"You tricked him!" Teresa lunged across the desk, her claw-like fingers lunging for Ximena’s hair. "You seduced my boy! You pinned another man’s bastard on my son! You dragged him into federal prison, you destroyed his marriage to a billionaire, you made us lose our mansion, our cars, our gallery—FOR A BASTARD?!"

The doctor jumped up, grabbing Teresa’s wrists, while a security guard rushed through the door to pin the screaming older woman against the wall.

"Let me go! Let me kill her!" Teresa screamed, her face purple with fury, kicking her legs like a madwoman. "Who is the father?! Tell me who the father is, you worthless parasite!"

Ximena sat curled in the corner, sobbing hysterically into her knees.

She didn't answer. She couldn't.

She couldn't tell them that eight months ago, while she was working late at the corporate tower, she had been sleeping with Gabriel, the handsome, twenty-two-year-old nightclub promoter from Condesa who had vanished to Cancún the moment she told him she was late. She had seen Ricardo’s clumsy, desperate flirtations in the office as a lifeline—a wealthy, aristocratic mark who was so starved for domestic validation and so desperate to prove his manhood to his powerful wife that he would believe anything she whispered in his ear.

"It’s over," Ximena whispered to herself, the tears soaking through her cheap jeans. "It’s all over."

Outside the open door, standing discreetly near the water cooler in the hallway, an operative from *Vance & Cross Forensic Risk* lowered his smartphone, stopped the audio recording, and tapped *Send*.

Ten seconds later, thirty floors above the city in the Torre Virreyes, Mateo Vance received the file, smiled, and slid his phone across my desk.

I listened to Teresa’s frantic, screaming voice for precisely five seconds before I tapped *Stop*.

"Poetic justice," Mateo remarked, leaning back in his chair with a dry chuckle. "He destroyed his entire life, committed federal fraud, and threw away five years of luxury for a child that doesn't even share his bloodline."

"Send the genetic report to the public defender at the Reclusorio Norte," I said, signing the final page of my corporate tax filings without looking up. "Let Ricardo read it tonight before the guards turn off the lights."
