Chapter 4 - The Sweet Revenge

Ten minutes later, the overhead jazz music faded into a soft, suspenseful instrumental chord. The restaurant manager stepped into the room, signaling the waitstaff to dim the crystal chandeliers until the salon was cast in a warm, amber glow.

At the head of the table, Patricia clapped her hands together excitedly, her face beaming with malicious triumph.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" Patricia announced loudly, standing up and raising her glass. "Before we move to dessert, I want to propose a very special toast. As we celebrate Sam’s fiftieth birthday, we also celebrate new beginnings—and old, enduring bonds that time and distance can never truly break. Let’s welcome back someone very dear to our family, who reminds us all of what true, timeless love looks like!"

Vanessa stood up beside Patricia, beaming like a pageant queen, soaking in the applause from several of Sam’s lifelong friends who had been indoctrinated into Patricia’s inner circle. Sam sat frozen, looking equal parts guilty and mesmerized, though he managed a weak, sheepish smile as the spotlight fell upon him and his ex-wife.

From my corner folding chair near the kitchen doors, I stood up.

I didn't slink. I didn't hide. I smoothed my emerald dress, lifted my chin high, and walked with slow, deliberate, predatory grace straight toward the center of the room.

At that exact moment, the double doors swung open.

Two junior waiters wheeled in a large, heavy stainless-steel service trolley. On the top shelf sat my magnificent, gold-leafed dark chocolate Belgian truffle cake, flickering with fifty golden candles. On the bottom shelf sat the garish white-and-pink cake, blazoned with red icing: “Welcome Back, Vanessa!”

The room gasped. Murmurs erupted instantly.

"What is that second cake?" someone whispered loudly.

"Is that... Vanessa’s name on a birthday cake?"

Patricia’s triumphant smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting nervously between the trolley and me. Sam half-rose from his chair, frowning deeply.

"Elena, what is the meaning of this?" Sam demanded, his voice laced with sudden irritation. "Why is there another cake?"

I stopped right beside the trolley, standing directly between Patricia and Vanessa. The two women looked up at me, their expressions shifting from triumphant amusement to sudden, subtle unease.

"Oh, Sam, don’t be spoilsport," I said, my voice carrying crystal-clear across the hushed room. "Your mother was so thoughtful. She ordered a special celebration cake for Vanessa, since apparently, according to your mother and your ex-wife, this party isn't just about your birthday—it's a reunion of your 'true, timeless love.'"

Vanessa’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. "Well, someone had to inject some class and reality into this dreary room," Vanessa snapped, tossing her head back. "You were never anything more than a placeholder, Elena. Everyone at this table knows it."

Patricia chimed in, regaining her haughty composure. "Really, Elena, stop making a spectacle of yourself. Go back to your seat in the corner and let the adults celebrate properly."

That was the exact tipping point. The moment of no return.

"You're right, Patricia," I said softly, a serene smile touching my lips. "We shouldn't let good cakes go to waste."

In one blinding, lightning-fast motion, my hands moved.

Before either woman could blink, before Sam could shout a warning, I grabbed Patricia by the back of her designer-blazer-clad shoulders with my left hand, and Vanessa by her glossy blonde hair with my right hand. With a surge of adrenaline-fueled strength born from months of silent torment, I slammed both of their faces down into the cakes right in front of them.

SPLAT.

The sound echoed sharply through the cavernous private dining room.

Patricia’s face plunged deep into the dark chocolate truffle cake, gold leaf and all. Vanessa’s face collided squarely with the pink-and-white buttercream masterpiece, her nose and forehead burying deep into the garish red icing.

For two full seconds, the entire room was frozen in absolute, paralyzed silence. You could hear the hum of the air conditioner.

Then, chaos erupted.
