Chapter 5 - The Anatomy of a Parasite

Within three hours of Martin Vance’s departure, the illusion of the Vance family’s comfortable upper-middle-class existence dissolved into absolute chaos.
Richard sat at the mahogany dining table—still littered with the remnants of the previous night’s dinner and the glittering shards of broken crystal—staring blankly at his laptop screen. The corporate portal of his consulting firm flashed a stark, unyielding red banner across the dashboard: Account Suspended. Operating Funds Frozen.
"Dad! Call the bank again!" Tyler shouted, pacing back and forth across the hardwood floor like a caged animal. "Greg says if we don't wire the initial partnership deposit by two o'clock, they’re giving the dealership allocation to another buyer! Forty grand, Dad! Just take it out of your personal savings!"
Richard slowly raised his head, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. "My personal savings, Tyler? What personal savings do you think I have?"
Tyler stopped pacing, blinking in confusion. "What do you mean? You’re a senior consultant! You own a company!"
"I own a shell corporation that has operated at a net loss for the last eighteen months," Richard said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer panic. "Every single payroll cycle, every equipment lease, every office rental fee—it has all been subsidized by the trust Helen controlled. Without her capital injection, the firm goes into liquidation by Friday afternoon."
Eleanor, who had been sitting rigidly in the armchair by the fireplace sipping black coffee, gasped softly and pressed a hand to her chest. "Liquidation? Richard, what are you talking about? How could your wife do this to us? After everything we’ve done for her!"
"Done for her?" Richard barked out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded almost unhinged. "Mother, what exactly have we done for her? For seven years, Helen paid the mortgage, funded our vacations, covered Tyler’s endless financial disasters, and tolerated your constant, thinly veiled insults about her background!"
"She was a cold, controlling woman!" Eleanor snapped back, her nostrils flaring with aristocratic indignation. "She never bowed down to the family! She acted as if her money gave her the right to dictate how we lived!"
"Her money did give her that right because it was the only thing keeping us afloat!" Richard slammed his fist onto the table, finally breaking under the weight of his own profound stupidity. "I didn't build this life, Mother! I rented it! And last night, because I wanted to feel like a big man in front of you and Tyler, I told her she was grounded!"
The room fell dead silent. Even Tyler stopped pacing, staring at his father as if he had finally lost his mind.
"You... you grounded her?" Tyler whispered, the absurdity of the phrase finally penetrating his self-absorbed mind. "Over a glass?"
"Over my own inflated ego," Richard whispered, burying his face in his hands as the full, crushing magnitude of his actions settled over him.
His phone buzzed on the table. It was an email notification from the commercial landlord of his downtown office suite.

Richard didn't even open it. He simply stared down at the polished wood, noticing for the first time a tiny speck of dried blood resting near the edge of a crystal shard—a lingering reminder of the moment Helen had quietly bled for a marriage that was already dead.
