Chapter 2 - The Sound of the Click

The silence in the grand foyer was absolute, heavy enough to suffocate.

Fiona clutched the lapels of her silk robe, her knuckles turning bone-white. "Julian, what is she talking about? What mortgage? This is your property! Your father left—"

"Your father left nothing, Fiona, except a mountain of debt that Julian has been covering by bleeding my corporate account dry," I interrupted, stepping out from behind the kitchen island. My voice didn't shake. The terror I had felt the night before had been incinerated, replaced by a cold, surgical clarity.

Darcy opened her leather binder, flipping past the first page to reveal a stack of certified bank statements, wire transfers, and property deeds.

"For the record," Darcy announced clearly, her voice carrying into the open-plan living room, "Sloan Vance-Montgomery is the sole primary owner of this condominium. Her maiden-name trust purchased this unit three years prior to her marriage. Julian’s name was added to the title under coercion and fraudulent marital promises two years ago. That error is currently being rectified in clause four of this emergency injunction."

Julian lunged forward, his face twisted in panic. "You bitch! You forged documents! You manipulated—"

"Step back, sir," one of the private security guards said smoothly, moving with terrifying precision to block Julian’s path. He didn't draw a weapon, but his stance was an immovable wall. "Do not approach counsel."

"Julian," Fiona hissed, grabbing his arm, her composure completely shattering. "Fix this. Call your lawyer. Make them leave!"

"He can’t call his lawyer, Fiona," I said, walking slowly toward them. "Because the retainer he paid his last attorney came out of the joint account I drained thirty minutes ago. You see, while you were sleeping, expecting me to slave over sixty dishes like your personal medieval serf, I was reviewing our financials. Did you know Julian spent twelve thousand dollars of my savings last month on a vintage watch to impress his golf buddies? Did you know he told them he bought this condo?"

Julian stared at me as if looking at a stranger—a stranger who had suddenly grown claws. "Sloan... baby, let's talk about this. Don't be dramatic. It was just a joke last night. Mom was just teasing about the sixty dishes. You know how she gets on her birthday—"

"A joke?" I stopped two feet away from him, looking up into the eyes of the man I had sacrificed five years of my life to support. "When you locked me in the kitchen and barked at me like a dog, was that a joke? When your mother laughed in the hallway while her son abused his wife, was that a punchline?"

I reached down to the pocket of my jeans, pulled out my phone, and tapped the screen.

The tiny speaker on my device filled the luxury condo with crystal-clear audio:

“Cook them or get out of my house!”

Followed instantly by Fiona’s shrill, gleeful cackle echoing down the hallway.

Fiona staggered backward, her emerald silk rustling against the wall. "That... that was edited! That's illegal wiretapping!"

"In Illinois, recording an act of domestic intimidation and false imprisonment in your own shared dwelling is entirely admissible when tied to an order of protection," Darcy recited effortlessly, handing a thick packet of documents directly to Julian’s chest. "You are hereby served with a temporary restraining order, immediate eviction notice from this property, and a freeze on all joint liquid assets."

Julian stared down at the papers, his world collapsing in real-time.
