Chapter 5 - The Fractured Alibi

Deep within the county detention center, the fluorescent lights buzzed with a dull, maddening hum that matched the relentless throbbing in Richard’s temples. He sat hunched over a heavy stainless-steel table in Interview Room B, his orange jumpsuit feeling scratchy and suffocating against his skin. His hair, usually meticulously styled with imported pomade, fell in greasy strands across his forehead.

The heavy steel door swung open with a loud metallic clank, and his defense attorney, a weary middle-aged man named Henderson, dropped a thick file onto the table with a heavy thud.

"It’s worse than you said, Richard," Henderson said without preamble, pulling out a chair and sitting down. "Much worse."

"What are you talking about?" Richard snapped, his voice hoarse and defensive. "It’s a domestic dispute! Couples argue all the time about finances. My mother recorded a snippet out of context, and the hospital staff overreacted. Get me out on bail!"

"Bail was denied," Henderson said flatly, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table. "Judge Sterling—no relation, thankfully—viewed the hospital surveillance footage from three nights ago. The video clearly shows you standing over your wife while she was trapped in her hospital bed, physically blocking her from calling for assistance while your mother manipulated the intravenous line controls to induce severe discomfort."

Richard went entirely rigid. "That’s a lie! We were just talking!"

"The audio feed on the room's emergency intercom system was active, Richard," Henderson said, his voice dripping with professional exhaustion. "It recorded your exact words: 'Sign the papers or your recovery time is going to get a lot more complicated, Clara.' That isn't a domestic argument. That’s premeditated extortion and endangerment of a patient in a medical facility."

Richard stared at the attorney, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps. The walls of the small room seemed to close in around him. For his entire life, he had believed that his charm, his status, and his last name were an impenetrable armor protecting him from consequences. Now, that armor had dissolved into acid.

"What about my mother?" Richard asked, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "She’s not going to take the fall for this, is she? She was just following my lead!"

Henderson let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Your mother spent the last two hours with Detective Ortiz giving a full, itemized confession. She handed over her phone’s cloud backup, which contains text messages spanning six months where you explicitly plotted how to isolate Clara, drain her rental income, and force her to sign over the investment portfolio under threat of abandonment."

Richard slammed his cuffed hands against the steel table, rattling the metal frame. "She ratted me out? My own mother?!"

"When people realize they’re looking at ten years in a federal penitentiary for white-collar conspiracy and elder-adjacent abuse, family loyalty tends to evaporate very quickly," Henderson said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "My advice? Start thinking about a plea bargain. Because right now, the district attorney has enough airtight evidence to lock you away until you’re old enough to collect social security."

As the attorney walked out, the heavy door slammed shut behind him, locking automatically with a definitive, chilling click. Richard buried his face in his cuffed hands, the absolute reality of his ruin finally sinking in.
