Chapter 9 - The Audit and the Exposure

By day three of our refuge in Charlotte, Grant’s carefully constructed world was completely dismantled. The freeze on his accounts wasn't just a temporary inconvenience; it triggered an automated internal compliance review at his firm, where executive leadership discovered that Grant had been misallocating client retainers and corporate funds to finance his personal lifestyle and his affair with Tessa.
Tessa, realizing with terrifying speed that the man whose house she had moved into with such smug confidence was suddenly broke, unemployed, and facing potential federal fraud charges, packed her designer bags and vanished from the house before the sun set on the second day. Grant was left entirely alone in his expensive, echoing mansion, staring at locked bank accounts, a frozen corporate ID badge, and a stack of legal subpoenas delivered by a county sheriff who didn't care about his title or his tailoring.
My phone rang only once from Grant’s number during that entire forty-eight-hour period. I didn't answer it. Instead, I let it go to voicemail, where the automated transcription later recorded a broken, frantic voice pleading for a conversation, asking me to come home, claiming that everything he did was "for the family."
I listened to the recording once, deleted it without emotion, and handed the phone back to Natalie.
“He wants to negotiate a settlement,” Natalie said, reviewing a preliminary proposal sent by Grant’s terrified legal team. “Full disclosure of all hidden assets, immediate transfer of the primary residential property into your sole name, full legal and physical custody of the children with structured supervised visitation for Grant, and comprehensive spousal and child support backed by escrow guarantees.”
I looked out the high-rise window at the bustling city below, feeling the last remaining shadows of the past nine years lift away from my spirit. I was eight months pregnant, carrying a new life into a world I had built with my own strength, intelligence, and unwavering resolve.

“Tell them we accept the baseline terms,” I said calmly, “subject to a full forensic audit of every single account he touched. I want every penny accounted for, and I want ironclad legal protections that ensure my children and I will never, ever be dependent on anyone’s permission to survive again.”
Natalie smiled—a genuine, warm expression of deep respect. “Done.”
