Chapter 8 - CLAIRE

We found Claire at an abandoned motel outside the city.
She was sitting beside a window.
When I walked inside, she stood.
We stared at each other.
Neither of us moved.
Then she whispered,
“Emma.”
I couldn't breathe.
She took one step toward me.
I stepped backward.
“You're real.”
She nodded.
“I am.”
“You're my mother.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.”
I wanted to hate her.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked:
“Why didn't you come for me?”
Her face collapsed.
“I tried.”
“When?”
“For years.”
“Why couldn't you find me?”
“They changed your name.”
“You knew where I was?”
“Sometimes.”
“Sometimes?”
“I watched you from a distance.”
My chest tightened.
“You watched me?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because the people who took you were still watching.”
I looked at Noah.
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“That's your son?”
“Yes.”
She approached slowly.
“May I?”
I hesitated.
Then handed her Noah.
She held him like something sacred.
Her hands trembled.
“He has your eyes.”
I cried.
For the first time since this nightmare began, I let myself cry.
Claire kissed Noah's forehead.
“I thought I'd never hold your child.”
Daniel stood near the door.
Claire looked at him.
“You married her.”
“Yes.”
“You knew?”
“Not everything.”
“You knew enough.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Claire handed Noah back to me.
“Your husband isn't the enemy.”
I looked at her.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
“He made terrible choices.”
Daniel flinched.
“But he wasn't part of the original operation.”
“Then why did you write that he knew where the money went?”
“Because he does.”
Daniel looked up.
Claire smiled sadly.
“The money isn't in Switzerland.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“Your father moved it.”
“Where?”
“Into an account controlled by Margaret.”
Rebecca stepped forward.
“So she still has it.”
“Yes.”
“Then why hasn't she disappeared?”
Claire looked at me.
“Because she needs Emma.”
“Why?”
“Because the trust requires your DNA.”
My stomach turned.
“They've been trying to get my DNA to access the money.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at the floor.
“So that's why Mom tested Noah.”
“Partly.”
“What else?”
Claire's expression became serious.
“They needed to know whether Noah carried your genetic markers.”
“Why?”
“Because if he did, they could use him as leverage.”
I held him tighter.
“No.”
Claire nodded.
“They wanted you afraid.”
A knock sounded at the door.
Everyone froze.
Three knocks.
Slow.
Claire whispered,
“They found us.”
Rebecca moved toward the window.
“Cars.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Back exit.”
We ran.
Claire grabbed my hand.
For the first time in twenty-eight years, my mother and I ran together.
We reached the parking lot.
A black SUV blocked the road.
Another vehicle approached from behind.
We were surrounded.
Then the motel lights came on.
Police.
Several cars.
Sirens.
I stared.
Rebecca smiled.
“I made one phone call.”
Officers rushed forward.
The men were arrested.
The investigator tried to run.
He was tackled before reaching the road.
I stood frozen.
Then one officer approached.
“Ms. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“We need to talk to you.”
“About what?”
He handed me a document.
“A warrant was issued for the arrest of Margaret Vale.”
My heart stopped.
“She was arrested?”
“No.”
“Then where is she?”
The officer looked at me.
“She disappeared thirty minutes ago.”
I stared at the document.
At the bottom was a photograph.
Margaret leaving a bank.
May you like
Holding a suitcase.
And beside her was my husband's mother.
