Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN IN THE DRIVEWAY

The knock came three times.

Slow.

Professional.

Not angry.

Not rushed.

Daniel immediately stepped away from my bedroom door.

His entire personality changed.

It was almost frightening how quickly it happened.

The man who had dragged me across the bathroom floor minutes earlier suddenly became a concerned husband.

"Officer," he called.

I heard the front door open.

A woman's voice followed.

"Mr. Mercer?"

"Yes."

"I'm Mara Bennett."

My heart hammered.

Claire looked at me.

"Don't trust him," she whispered.

Daniel spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"My wife is inside. She's having another episode."

Another episode.

The phrase made my skin crawl.

Mara answered, "Is the baby with her?"

"Yes."

"Is the door locked?"

"She locked herself inside."

There was a pause.

Then Mara said, "I'd like to speak with her."

Daniel sighed.

"She's paranoid."

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I finally understood.

He wanted everyone to believe that my fear was evidence against me.

Every refusal became instability.

Every tear became manipulation.

Every attempt to protect my daughter became proof that I was dangerous.

I unlocked the door but didn't open it.

"Ms. Bennett?"

"Yes?"

"My husband has assaulted me."

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"She's confused."

I raised my voice.

"He dragged me across the floor by my hair."

Silence.

Then Mara said, "Mr. Mercer, step away from the door."

He didn't answer.

"Now."

His footsteps moved backward.

I opened the door six inches.

Mara stood in the hallway wearing a dark coat.

She looked nothing like the person I had imagined.

She wasn't some mysterious stranger.

She looked exhausted.

And terrified.

Her eyes went immediately to my face.

Then to my baby.

Then to the blood on my cheek.

"Oh my God."

Daniel spoke quickly.

"She did that to herself."

Mara looked at him.

"Did she?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I don't appreciate the implication."

Mara ignored him.

"Ma'am, can you come outside?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"That's okay."

She lowered her voice.

"I believe you."

Those three words nearly broke me.

I had spent so long wondering whether anyone would.

Mara looked at Claire.

"Did you bring the phone?"

Claire nodded.

Daniel's face changed.

"What phone?"

Nobody answered.

Mara took one step toward him.

"Mr. Mercer, I need you to understand that this situation has changed."

"What does that mean?"

"It means the information you provided to us is no longer being treated as reliable."

Daniel stared at her.

"You told me—"

"I told you what I was told."

"And I told you she was unstable."

"You also told me there were witnesses."

Daniel looked at Claire.

Claire looked away.

Mara continued.

"Your sister is one of those witnesses."

Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Claire."

Claire stepped beside me.

"I won't lie for you."

His face hardened.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

Daniel laughed once.

Coldly.

"You think she's going to protect you?"

Claire didn't answer.

Mara did.

"No."

Daniel turned toward her.

"Then who?"

Mara reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

"We found the original report."

Daniel's expression collapsed.

I stared at the folder.

"What report?"

Mara looked at me.

"The hospital report from the night your daughter was born."

My heart stopped.

I remembered that night.

The argument.

The ambulance.

Daniel telling everyone I was exhausted.

Daniel telling the nurses I was confused.

And one moment I had buried because I couldn't bear to think about it.

The bruise around my wrist.

Mara opened the folder.

"Your husband reported that you fell."

I looked at Daniel.

"You told them I fell."

He said nothing.

Mara pulled out a photograph.

"The medical examiner disagreed."

Daniel suddenly lunged for the folder.

Mara stepped back.

Claire screamed.

"Daniel!"

He stopped.

His chest rose and fell.

Then he smiled.

It wasn't a normal smile.

It was the smile of someone who had just realized his entire plan was collapsing.

"You don't understand," he said.

Mara's eyes narrowed.

"Then explain it."

Daniel looked at me.

"I was protecting my family."

I held my daughter tighter.

"No."

He shook his head.

"You don't know what you found."

Then he looked directly at Claire.

"Because you never told her about the basement."

My blood went cold.

"The basement?"

Claire's face drained of color.

Daniel smiled.

May you like

"Ask your sister-in-law what she saw down there."
