Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Past

"Drink this," Dad said softly, holding a paper cup of warm water to my lips.
I took a small sip, the liquid soothing my raw throat. The adrenaline was finally beginning to drain out of my system, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. My ankle throbbed dully beneath the fresh white bandage, a constant reminder of the physical chains they had used to try and silence me, but the emotional chains felt heavier—the realization of how close I had come to losing everything.
"We need to talk about the company, Arthur," Marcus Vance said, stepping closer to the bed while tapping his pen against his leather folder. "With Julian detained and the federal freeze on his personal holdings, the board of Vance Enterprises is going to wake up to a bloodbath tomorrow morning. Julian was using subsidiary shell companies to siphon operating capital into his private tech venture—the very venture he was trying to fund by selling off your daughter’s maternal trust."
Dad ran a hand over his face, looking older and more worn than I had ever seen him. The vibrant, indestructible patriarch of the Vance family looked like a man whose foundation had been cracked wide open.
"Let the board burn whatever needs burning," Dad said grimly. "Restore Victoria’s full control over her mother’s estate immediately. And Marcus? I want every single contract Julian touched in the last two years audited down to the last penny. If he signed his name to it, assume it's fraudulent until proven otherwise."
"Already on it," Marcus nodded, sliding the papers back into his briefcase. "I'll handle the police statements and coordinate with the district attorney's office. Given the medical battery and forgery charges, bail won't even be an option for at least forty-eight hours."
He turned to me, offering a gentle, reassuring smile. "Rest up, Victoria. You're safe here. No one is ever touching you or your baby again."
When Marcus left, closing the door softly behind him, only Dad and Nurse Clara remained in the room. Clara was checking my IV drip, adjusting the saline flow with quiet precision.
"You're a remarkable woman, Nurse Clara," Dad said, his voice thick with emotion as he looked at her. "If you hadn't checked those files... if you hadn't asked the right questions..."
"Mr. Vance," Clara interrupted gently, offering a faint, tired smile. "I'm a nurse. My job isn't just to dispense medicine; it's to protect patients when the world outside tries to break in. Unfortunately, I see cases like this more often than people realize. Wealthy families, powerful men, quiet victims who think nobody is listening because everyone around them is on the payroll."
She finished adjusting the monitor and patted my uninjured hand. "I'll check back in an hour. Get some real rest."
When Clara stepped out, leaving Dad and me alone in the sterile quiet of the VIP room, the dam finally broke again, but this time it wasn't panic—it was grief.
I leaned forward, burying my face in my father’s shoulder, and sobbed until my chest ached. Dad wrapped his arms around me, holding me tighter than he had since I was a little girl, whispering apologies into my hair over and over again.
"I should have listened to you," Dad whispered, his voice cracking. "When you told me last month that Julian was acting distant... when you said he was asking too many questions about your grandmother's property deeds... I thought it was just wedding stress. I thought he was just a stressed-out husband."
May you like
"He wasn't stressed, Dad," I murmured, pulling back and looking him straight in the eye. "He was calculating. He knew about the prenup. He knew that as long as we were legally married, he couldn't touch the principal of the trust. But if he could declare me mentally incompetent... if he could force a separation under psychiatric duress... the legal clauses would have handed him total administrative control."
Dad’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white once more. "He'll never see the light of day again, Victoria. I promise you that. On my life, on your mother’s memory... he will pay for every single second of what he put you through."
