Chapter 4 - Shadows and Strategy

While I was wheeled into the operating theater for my wrist surgery, the machinery of Sterling Global Holdings was already shifting into overdrive across the city. Ryan Vance was about to learn that when you provoke a titan, there is nowhere left to hide.

Back at the mansion—or rather, the property now legally reclaimed by Sterling Holdings—Ryan was standing in the middle of the living room, frantically throwing clothes into a cheap plastic garbage bag. His hands shook so violently he dropped a handful of designer shirts onto the floor.

"This is a mistake! You can't do this!" Ryan screamed at the two burly security guards standing stoically by the front door, watching his pathetic breakdown with deadpan expressions. "Call Arthur Sterling! Tell him I want to talk settlement! I have rights! I have—"

The heavy oak front door swung open, and Marcus walked in, followed by two local police detectives in plainclothes.

"Ryan Vance?" the lead detective asked, flashing a badge.

Ryan froze, the garbage bag slipping from his grip. "I... I haven't done anything illegal. This is a civil dispute! My lawyers—"

"Your lawyers dropped you twenty minutes ago," Marcus interrupted coldly, stepping forward with a stack of signed arrest warrants. "These detectives are here regarding federal wire fraud, securities violations, and grand larceny involving over four hundred thousand dollars in stolen investor funds."

"No... no, no, no!" Ryan lunged toward the back door, desperate to escape, but the security guards intercepted him instantly, pinning his arms behind his back with practiced ease.

As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, Ryan let out a desperate, pathetic wail that echoed through the empty, hollow rooms of the house he had pretended to own.

"You can't do this to me!" Ryan shrieked as the detectives dragged him toward the front porch. "I’m a businessman! I’m successful! Elena! ELENA!"

His frantic cries faded into the night as the police cruiser doors slammed shut, whisking him away to a holding cell where his expensive suits and fake awards wouldn't save him.

Marcus watched the cruiser pull away, then pulled out his phone, dialing a direct line to the hospital suite.

"Mr. Sterling," Marcus reported crisply. "The package has been delivered to local authorities. Federal charges are locked in. He won't be seeing bail anytime soon."

On the other end of the line, Dad stood by the hospital window, looking out over the glittering city skyline. The surgery was over, and I was resting comfortably in recovery, my arm stabilized in a heavy cast.

"Good," Dad said quietly. "Make sure the media gets the full financial disclosure package. Let the public see the foundation of Vance Enterprises for what it truly was."

"Consider it done, sir."

Dad hung up the phone and walked back into my hospital room, pulling a chair up beside my bed. As I stirred awake, blinking sleepily against the soft hospital lights, he reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from my forehead.

"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" Dad asked softly.

May you like

"Like I got hit by a truck," I mumbled, a weak smile tugging at the corner of my lips. "And like a massive weight just fell off my shoulders."

Dad chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound of pure relief. "Good. Because tomorrow, we start the next chapter. And this time, Elena, you’ll never have to shrink yourself for anyone ever again."
