Chapter 7 - The Final Siege

It was Friday night. The wind howled outside my apartment windows, rattling the glass as a cold autumn storm blew down from the mountains.

I was sitting at my desk reviewing the final draft of the divorce settlement—which included a demand for full reimbursement of legal fees, restitution for the extortion, and an order barring Trevor from any claim to the condo equity—when the heavy silence of my apartment was shattered.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

Someone was pounding on my front door with terrifying violence.

"Victoria! Open this door right now!" Trevor’s voice screamed from the hallway, muffled but thick with rage. "I know you're in there! You’re destroying my family! Open the damn door before I break it down!"

I didn't flinch. I immediately reached for my phone, dialed 911, and pressed speaker.

"Denver Police Emergency. What is your location?" the dispatcher’s calm voice answered.

"My name is Victoria Vance. I am at [Address withheld]. My estranged husband and his family are currently attempting to break into my apartment. I have an active restraining order pending service, and they are violently assaulting my front door."

"Units are dispatched, ma'am. Stay on the line. Do not open the door under any circumstances."

I backed away from the entryway, retreating toward the kitchen island as the violent pounding continued.

Then came a terrifying sound: the sharp, metallic screech of metal scraping against metal inside the new deadbolt lock.

The heavy brass tumblers turned. The reinforced deadbolt clicked open.

The front door swung inward with a crash.

Trevor forced his way across the threshold, his face contorted into a mask of feral fury. Right behind him marched Eleanor, her eyes wild with panic, followed by Briana, who was trembling like a leaf in a hurricane.

"You think you can ruin us?!" Trevor roared, stalking down the hallway toward the kitchen. "You think you can freeze my sister's accounts and sick the cops on our friends?! You arrogant, cold-hearted bitch!"

I stood my ground behind the kitchen island, holding my phone tight. "Trevor, stop right there. The police are on their way. If you take another step, you are adding felony burglary and violation of a pending protective order to your list of charges."

Trevor didn't stop. He lunged forward with terrifying speed, grabbing my arm and shoving me hard. I lost my footing and crashed backward onto the hardwood floor, the breath knocked out of my lungs.

Before I could even roll over, Eleanor rushed in behind him, dropping her full weight across my arms, pinning my wrists to the floor with surprising, adrenaline-fueled strength.

"Hold her down!" Eleanor screeched. "She needs to learn a lesson she will never, ever forget!"

Trevor didn't hesitate. He turned away from me, bolted across the kitchen, and yanked open the utility drawer by the pantry.

When he turned back around, light flashed off the heavy, razor-sharp steel blades in his hand.

He was carrying my heavy kitchen shears.
