Chapter 8 - The Rebranding of Northstar Hospitality

By the winter solstice, the dust had completely settled across the corporate landscape, and Northstar Capital’s newest division—Northstar Hospitality—officially launched its inaugural portfolio of luxury boutique hotels.
The crown jewel of the acquisition was the grand historic hotel in midtown Manhattan that had once served as the flagship property of the Vance Hotel Group. We had spent the past two months executing a massive, multi-million-dollar renovation, stripping away the dated, pretentious decor that had defined the Vance era and replacing it with sleek, modern elegance, sustainable luxury, and state-of-the-art guest services.
On the night of the grand reopening gala, the grand lobby was bathed in warm golden light, filled with hundreds of the city’s most influential business leaders, cultural icons, and international investors.
I stood on the mezzanine overlooking the bustling, elegant lobby, wearing a custom midnight-blue velvet evening gown that exuded quiet power and effortless grace. My mother’s pearls rested securely around my neck, glowing softly against the dark fabric—reclaimed, restored, and completely untainted by the past.
Sarah walked up beside me, handing me a glass of sparkling mineral water with a lemon twist.
“The reception downstairs is an absolute triumph,” Sarah said, her eyes shining with pride. “Every single room in the hotel is booked through the New Year, and the financial press is calling this the most successful hospitality turnaround of the decade.”
“It’s a good start,” I replied, smiling as I watched the crowd below enjoy the live jazz quartet and the exquisite, beautifully crafted desserts being served by our catering staff.
Speaking of desserts, the pastry chef had insisted on featuring an extraordinary multi-tiered white chocolate creation as the centerpiece of the gala’s dessert bar. When Sarah and I had reviewed the menu weeks earlier, we had both shared a quiet, knowing laugh over it. This time, the cake was admired, photographed, sliced with surgical precision, and enjoyed by everyone in attendance without a single drop of drama.
“Have you heard anything about Grant lately?” Sarah asked quietly, glancing sideways at me.
I took a slow sip of my water, my expression remaining completely neutral.
“My private investigators report that he moved out of state last week,” I said softly. “Working odd jobs, living in a modest studio apartment somewhere in the Midwest, entirely erased from high society. His friends won’t return his calls, his family name is a toxic liability, and he finally has to learn what it means to build something from the ground up without a safety net or a stolen fortune.”

Sarah nodded slowly, her gaze drifting back down to the vibrant crowd below. “Karma is a remarkably efficient accountant, isn’t she?”
“The best in the business,” I agreed with a faint smile.
