Chapter 6 - The Recall

While Charles stood stammering on the lawn, the digital infrastructure of Whitmore Enterprises was experiencing a catastrophic cardiac arrest.
Downtown at the gleaming glass tower of Whitmore headquarters, the corporate financial servers flashed crimson. Automated algorithms fired off thousands of high-priority alerts simultaneously across every department, routing straight to the terminals of chief financial officers, risk assessors, and external auditors.
CRITICAL LIQUIDITY ALERT:NORTHBRIDGE CAPITAL LP HAS ISSUED A IMMEDIATE UNILATERAL DEMAND FOR FULL PRINCIPAL REPAYMENT ON ALL OUTSTANDING DEBT INSTRUMENTS.TOTAL DUE: $84,500,000.00.DEADLINE: IMMEDIATE.
In the corporate treasury department, Chief Financial Officer Arthur Sterling stared at his monitor in absolute horror. He hammered his desk phone, dialing the emergency desk at Northbridge Capital. The line rang twice before a cold automated recording answered: “This extension is permanently disconnected. All inquiries must be directed to legal counsel.”
Arthur frantically switched lines, calling the commercial banks—First Continental, Meridian Trust, and Apex National—that held Whitmore’s operating accounts.
“This is Arthur Sterling at Whitmore Enterprises,” he blurted out as a senior bank VP answered. “We need to authorize an emergency draw on our revolving credit facility to cover a sudden administrative transfer—”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Sterling,” the banker’s voice cut in, dripping with clinical detachment. “First Continental has received formal notice from Northbridge Capital regarding a primary lien priority override. All revolving credit facilities extended to Whitmore Enterprises have been frozen effective immediately pending asset receivership.”
“Frozen?!” Arthur yelled, standing up so fast his chair crashed to the floor. “On what grounds? We are fully solvent! Our real estate portfolio alone is worth—”
“Your real estate portfolio was cross-collateralized against Northbridge’s primary debt notes,” the banker replied coldly. “And as of three minutes ago, Northbridge has executed a total foreclosure sweep. Your accounts are locked.”
