Chapter 5 - The Fallout and the Apology Tour

While Elizabeth’s life was scaling new heights, Larry’s world was rapidly unraveling.

Without Elizabeth managing his schedule, keeping his apartment clean, acting as a buffer between him and Kathleen, and paying half the bills while he invested in risky crypto schemes, Larry’s life descended into total chaos. His mother had moved into his apartment temporarily "to recover from the shock of the wedding day," which meant Kathleen's tyranny was now dialed up to eleven.

One evening, as Elizabeth was returning home from a celebratory dinner with Jenna, she found a disheveled figure waiting in the lobby of her new apartment building.

It was Larry.

He looked ten pounds lighter, with dark circles under his eyes and a rumpled suit that looked like he'd slept in it. When he saw her walk through the glass doors, he scrambled to his feet like a man half-starved.

“Elizabeth! Thank God,” Larry breathed, stepping forward. “I’ve been trying to find you for weeks. Do you have any idea how hard life has been?”

Elizabeth stopped a few paces away, her expression entirely neutral. She didn't feel anger anymore; she felt only profound detachment.

“What do you want, Larry?”

“I want you to come home,” he pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation. “Mom's health has been terrible since the wedding. She’s constantly stressed, the apartment is a mess, and... and I realized I made a mistake. I shouldn't have asked you to kneel. Mom shouldn't have brought that dress. But we can fix this. We can elope, just the two of us, and leave Mom out of it.”

Elizabeth looked at him—really looked at him. She saw a weak, pathetic man who only wanted her back because his servant and emotional punching bag had walked out the door. He wasn't apologizing because he understood his cruelty; he was apologizing because his comfortable life had collapsed.

“Larry,” Elizabeth said softly, “when your mother told me to wear that rotting dress, and when you told me to get on my knees to apologize for defending my own dignity, you showed me exactly who you both were. You will never stand up to your mother. You will never respect me as an equal partner. And I will never go back to a prison I fought so hard to escape.”

“Elizabeth, please!” Larry cried, reaching out to grab her wrist.

She stepped back sharply, her eyes flashing with ice. “Don't touch me. If you ever come near me or this building again, I will file a restraining order. Consider this our final conversation.”

Without waiting for his reply, she turned and walked toward the elevator, leaving him standing alone in the lobby.
