Chapter 6 - The Social Guillotine

By noon the following day, Denise Reynolds had executed her counter-strike.
My phone blew up with notifications from Instagram, Facebook, and local society blogs. A headline on a regional news feed screamed: *SOCIETY WEDDING ERUPTS: MENTALLY UNSTABLE HEIRESS ACCUSED OF ATTACKING FIANCÉ AFTER BOGUS PREGNANCY CLAIM.*
Denise had released an edited statement to the local press. She claimed that Caleb had tried to break off the engagement weeks ago due to my “controlling and abusive behavior.” She painted Belle as a paid actress hired by my family to stage an intervention, and described Caleb’s use of the knife as a “defensive act to untangle himself from a violent physical altercation initiated by the bride.”
Attached to the article was a still photograph taken from an unflattering angle: me standing over Caleb with my hands raised, my face twisted in anger, while he knelt on the floor among the torn silk.
Nia paced across the living room, fuming. “That vile, lying witch! Look at the comments! People are calling you a lunatic! They’re saying you deserved to have the dress shredded!”
Belle was trembling, staring at her own phone. “They posted my name. Denise gave my name to a reporter. My mother just called me from Ohio crying her eyes out. People are leaving disgusting comments on my social media pages, calling me a whore and a blackmailer!”
I walked over to the dining table where my laptop sat. I plugged in the external hard drive given to me by our official videographer, Marcus.
“Marcus didn't just shoot still photos,” I said calmly. “He shoots continuous 4K video with directional boom microphones. He had two cameras running the entire time Belle walked down that aisle.”
I opened the video editing software. The footage was pristine.
You could clearly see Belle walking in, trembling, holding her ultrasound. You could hear Denise screaming that Belle had no manners, followed by Caleb lunging toward me. The audio was crystal clear: Caleb’s voice roaring, *“You ruined everything! You never know when to shut your mouth!”* followed by the horrific sound of the serrated blade ripping through seven layers of vintage Lyon silk.
You could see the manic rage in his eyes. You could see the deliberate, downward sawing motion of his arm, inches from my ribs.
“Marcus has already signed an affidavit certifying the chain of custody of this file,” I told Nia. “And Belle, do you still have the voicemail Denise left you on Thursday?”
Belle nodded slowly. “The one where she told me to make a scene at the altar?”
“Forward it to me,” I said.
Within two hours, we didn't just leak the footage; we held a formal press briefing on the steps of the municipal courthouse alongside my attorney, Arthur Vance.
Arthur was a seventy-year-old titan of commercial and criminal law who had represented my grandfather for thirty years. He stood behind a bank of microphones, flanked by two large digital displays.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the press,” Arthur said, his voice rolling like thunder across the courthouse plaza. “Yesterday, an orchestrated campaign of slander was launched against my client, Clara Vance. We are here today not merely to refute these baseless allegations, but to present incontrovertible evidence of felonious assault, identity theft, grand larceny, and corporate fraud committed by Caleb Reynolds and his mother, Denise Reynolds.”
Arthur pressed a button on a remote.
The high-definition video of Caleb attacking my dress played on the giant screens. The audio echoed through the plaza—Caleb’s snarling obscenities, the terrifying rip of the knife, the gasps of horrified wedding guests.
The gathered reporters went dead silent.
Then Arthur played Denise’s voicemail. Denise’s distinct, patrician voice echoed from the speakers: *“Belle, remember, walk in right during the vows. Make it impossible for them to proceed. If Clara’s family tries to silence you, scream at the top of your lungs. I will handle the rest. We will get him away from her, and your child will be taken care of.”*
Flashbulbs exploded in a blinding wall of light.
“Furthermore,” Arthur continued, presenting a stack of legal filings, “we have filed emergency motions to freeze all personal and corporate assets belonging to Vanguard Crest Logistics, Caleb Reynolds, and Denise Reynolds. A warrant has been issued for Mr. Reynolds’s rearrest on felony charges of forgery and grand theft.”
I stood at the podium in a tailored black suit. I didn't cry. I didn't look broken. I looked directly into the news cameras, knowing that somewhere in her sprawling suburban mansion, Denise Reynolds was watching.

“You tried to cut away my pride with an eight-inch knife, Caleb,” I said into the microphones. “All you managed to do was cut away your own disguise.”
