Chapter 4 - The Audit Trail

The conference room at Montgomery, Sterling & Croft Estate Law smelled of aged mahogany, fresh-brewed espresso, and expensive paper. It was a stark contrast to the sterile fluorescent glare of the hospital and the gritty tension of Elmwood Avenue.

Eleanor Vance-Montgomery sat at the head of a massive oval conference table, surrounded by three junior associates and a towering stack of financial statements, forensic accounting printouts, and digital audit logs.

I sat across from her, wearing a crisp civilian button-down shirt instead of my uniform, though my posture remained as rigid and disciplined as ever.

"The forensic accounting team finished pulling the transaction trails from your credit union and the associated shell entities Vanessa set up," Eleanor said, sliding a thick summary packet across the mahogany surface toward me. "It’s actually worse—or better, depending on how you look at the prosecution's case—than we initially thought."

I flipped open the binder. Pages of transaction codes, wire routing numbers, and merchant receipts stared back at me.

"Explain," I said quietly.

"Vanessa wasn't just pocketing your deployment savings for everyday luxury shopping," Eleanor explained, tapping her pen against the margin of the report. "She was positioning herself to acquire luxury real estate under a blind corporate trust in downtown Seattle. She used your eighty-four thousand dollars as the primary down payment on a luxury high-rise condo, listing herself as the sole managing member of a dummy LLC called Vance-Sterling Holdings."

I stared at the name on the corporate filing document. Vance-Sterling Holdings. She hadn't even bothered to be creative with her greed. She was already planning our marriage—or rather, the aftermath of our marriage—where she would inherit my estate, secure the Elmwood house, and leave me with nothing.

"Can we claw those funds back?" I asked, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

"Absolutely," Eleanor replied with a confident smile. "Because the funds originated from a verified military service member’s deployment account, and because the transfer was executed using fraudulent power-of-attorney documentation while you were deployed overseas, we are protected under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) in addition to standard federal wire fraud statutes. The federal judge has already granted an emergency freeze on the condo escrow account in Seattle. That property is currently locked tight."

"What about her criminal charges?"

"The district attorney’s office filed a formal five-count felony indictment this morning," Eleanor said, sliding a second document across the table. "Elder abuse resulting in physical harm, wire fraud, identity theft, forgery of legal documents, and attempted grand larceny. Bail has been set at one hundred thousand dollars cash-only. Given that her family has no substantial local assets and her co-conspirators—if she had any—are scattering like cockroaches, she’s sitting comfortably in the county detention center with zero prospect of posting bond."

I closed the binder, leaning back in my chair. For months, Vanessa had played the role of the devoted fiancée, while operating a ruthless, calculated financial scam behind my back.

"When is the arraignment?" I asked.

"Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock," Eleanor said, watching me closely. "You don't have to be there, Daniel. My firm can handle all court appearances on your and your mother’s behalf."

"No," I said, my voice dropping into that cold, absolute register. "I’ll be there. I want to look her in the eye when the judge reads the charges."
