Chapter 5 - The Gala of Retribution

Twenty-four hours later, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of black ties, diamonds, and power.

Every titan of industry, foreign diplomat, and media mogul on the Eastern Seaboard was in attendance. But tonight, nobody was talking about quarterly earnings or federal interest rates.

There was only one topic on everyone’s lips: Julian Thorne’s sudden, shocking marriage to the ICU nurse who had been left at the altar by his own vice president.

Backstage in the private VIP suite of the Plaza, I stood in front of a three-way mirror, barely recognizing the woman staring back at me.

Julian’s private stylist had spent four hours transforming me. Gone was the practical ponytail, the scrub pants, and the timid posture of a woman trying not to take up too much space. My dark hair was styled into an intricate, modern updo, with soft tendrils framing my face. My makeup was bold—a sharp cat-eye and deep crimson lips that commanded attention.

And the dress.

Julian had personally commissioned it from a Parisian atelier that morning, flown in via private jet. It was a gown of liquid midnight-blue silk that hugged every curve before cascading into a dramatic train. The neckline was an asymmetrical architectural cut, showcasing my collarbones and the heavy platinum-and-sapphire necklace Julian had fastened around my neck ten minutes ago.

“You look like you were born to rule an empire,” a voice spoke from the doorway.

I turned. Julian was standing there, looking devastatingly handsome in a custom Tom Ford tuxedo. His broad shoulders filled the frame of the door, his eyes dark and appraising as they swept over me.

“I feel like an imposter,” I admitted, my voice slightly breathless. My fingers nervously touched the sapphire pendant. “Julian, everyone out there knows what happened yesterday. They’ve seen the video of Margaret pouring wine on me. They know I was dumped twenty-four hours ago.”

Julian walked toward me, the steady cadence of his footsteps grounding the fluttering panic in my chest. He stopped right behind me, looking at our reflection in the mirror.

He placed his hands gently on my bare shoulders. His palms were warm against my skin.

“Let them look,” Julian said, his voice low and vibrating against my back. “Yesterday, they saw a woman being attacked by cowards. Tonight, they see the woman who owns the man who controls their portfolios. In this town, Maya, people don't respect kindness. They respect power. And tonight, you have more power than anyone in that ballroom.”

I looked at our reflection. Standing beside Julian, I didn’t look like a victim. I looked formidable.

“Are you ready?” he asked, offering his arm.

I took a deep breath, letting the cool silk settle against my skin. “Let’s go.”

The double mahogany doors of the VIP suite opened, and we stepped onto the grand balcony overlooking the ballroom.

The moment Julian Thorne appeared with me on his arm, the roar of conversation below died instantly.

Heads turned by the hundreds. Champagne flutes paused halfway to lips. String quartets continued to play softly, but the atmosphere in the room shifted so dramatically it felt like the air pressure had dropped before a thunderstorm.

Julian led me down the curved marble staircase with slow, deliberate grace. Every step was measured. He didn’t rush. He forced every single billionaire, CEO, and socialite in Manhattan to look at me, to take in the midnight-blue silk, the sapphires, and the ironclad certainty in his eyes.

When our feet touched the ballroom floor, the crowd parted instantly.

“Julian,” spoke an older, distinguished man with silver hair—Arthur Vance, Ryan’s estranged uncle and the senior chairman of the Vance Family Trust. “Congratulations on the... unexpected nuptials.”

Arthur looked at me, his eyes sharp, evaluating. “Mrs. Thorne. You look breathtaking.”

“Thank you, Mr. Vance,” I said smoothly, my voice clear and melodic. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet the honorable side of the family.”

A faint ripple of amusement passed through the surrounding circle of executives. Arthur Vance’s lips twitched into an appreciative smile. “Sharp tongue. I like her, Julian. Better than the last company you kept.”

Before Julian could reply, a sudden disturbance erupted near the main entrance.

“Get your hands off me! I’m the Vice President of Logistics!”

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the room.

The crowd gasped, parting quickly as two security guards were shoved aside.

Ryan Vance stumbled into the ballroom.

He was still wearing the tuxedo from yesterday, but it was crumpled, the bow tie hanging loosely around his neck. His face was pale, his eyes rimmed with red, and the stench of bourbon was palpable even from ten feet away.

Behind him, Margaret Vance hurried in, her face caked in heavy foundation to hide the puffiness of her eyes, wearing an outdated Chanel gown that looked like it had been pulled from storage.

“Maya!” Ryan shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria as he locked eyes with me. “Maya, thank God!”

The entire ballroom froze. Not a single person moved.

Ryan ignored the stares of Wall Street’s most powerful elite, his gaze fixated entirely on my midnight-blue dress, on the sapphires around my neck, and finally on Julian’s hand resting possessively on the curve of my waist.

“What are you doing?” Ryan gasped, taking three unsteady steps toward us before Julian’s personal security wall formed instantly, blocking his path. “Maya, look at you... what is he doing to you? Why are you dressed like that?”

I stood beside Julian, my spine straight, my chin lifted high. I didn’t shrink back. For the first time in eighteen months, looking at Ryan Vance didn't make me feel small. It made me feel nothing at all.

“I’m attending my husband’s company gala, Ryan,” I said, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent room. “What are you doing here?”

“Your husband?!” Ryan laughed, a ragged, ugly sound. “He’s using you, Maya! Don't you see that?! He set me up! He hired a woman to seduce me just so he could take you from me! He’s playing a game!”

Margaret pushed past Ryan, her voice trembling with venomous desperation. “Julian Thorne! You think you can destroy my family and parade this little tramp around in front of our friends?! She’s a common nurse! She washed old men’s bedpans for forty dollars an hour! She doesn't belong here!”

The silence in the room became suffocating. Several high-society women in the front row looked at Margaret with open disgust.

Julian didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t step forward. He simply raised his right hand, signaling the audio technicians at the back of the room.

Above the main stage, the massive LED screens—originally set up for the corporate quarterly presentation—flickered to life.

A collective intake of breath swept through the ballroom.

Displayed in high-definition video was the surveillance footage from the St. Regis presidential suite from yesterday afternoon.

Ryan Vance’s face appeared on a screen forty feet wide. The audio boomed through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art sound system with crystal clarity:

*“She’s an ICU nurse. She should be grateful I’m pulling her out of that dirty hospital... Maya is convenient, but she’s easily discarded once I make partner.”*

Then the screen split.

On the other half, a bank transfer ledger appeared, highlighting six hundred and fifty thousand dollars moved from Titan Logistics into an offshore account titled *Margaret Vance Holdings LLC*.

Beneath it was a bright red banner: **FEDERAL INDICTMENT PENDING: WIRE FRAUD AND GRAND LARCENY.**

Ryan turned white as a sheet. His knees buckled slightly, his mouth hanging open like a fish gasping for air.

Margaret let out a choked shriek, dropping her gold clutch to the floor. “No... no! Turn it off! That’s private! That’s illegal!”

Julian stepped forward, just two paces, his presence commanding the entire cavernous room.

“Ryan Vance,” Julian announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “At nine o'clock tomorrow morning, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York will unseal charges against you and your mother for securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and identity theft.”

He paused, looking at the security team flanking the entrance.

“Remove these trespassers from the building. If they resist, have the officers waiting in the lobby execute the arrest warrants immediately.”

Four armed guards stepped forward, grabbing Ryan by the arms.

“Maya! Maya, please!” Ryan screamed, thrashing against their grip as they dragged him backward toward the doors. “I love you! I made a mistake! You know I love you! Don't let him do this to me!”

I looked into Ryan Vance’s desperate, pleading eyes.

I remembered the cold wine soaking into my skin. I remembered the laughter of the guests. I remembered the eighteen months I spent shrinking myself so he could feel like a giant.

“You called me a placeholder, Ryan,” I said, loud enough for every ear in that ballroom to hear. “Placeholders get replaced.”

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut, cutting off his screams forever.

May you like

The ballroom erupted into thunderous, deafening applause.
