Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

The afternoon sun blazed across the rugged cliffs of Acadia National Park, painting the granite shoreline in brilliant shades of amber, bronze, and deep slate gray.
Olivia stood at the very summit of the coastal overlook, her hiking boots planted firmly on the ancient rock, the Atlantic wind whipping her dark hair away from her face. Below her, the endless expanse of the ocean stretched out toward the horizon, vast, untamed, and illuminated by a brilliant wash of golden light.
She closed her eyes, took a deep, full breath of the salt-kissed air, and felt the last remaining ghost of her old life dissolve completely into the wind.
She didn't look back toward Texas. She didn't wonder what headlines were running in the Austin papers, or what new crisis her father was trying to navigate without her financial cushion. Their story was finished—a cautionary tale of what happens when people mistake unconditional generosity for infinite weakness, and treat a human being like an ATM machine rather than a daughter.
Her own story, however, was only just beginning.
She had traded a golden cage built on obligation for an open horizon built on freedom. Every dollar she earned was hers. Every choice she made was deliberate. Every boundary she drew was absolute.
Caleb walked up beside her, leaning casually against a weather-beaten pine tree and gazing out at the magnificent view.
"Pretty good office view you’ve got out here," Caleb remarked with a quiet grin.
Olivia turned her head, looking out over the endless ocean before her, a confident, radiant smile touching the corners of her mouth.

"It’s the best view in the world, Caleb," she said softly.
And for the first time in her entire life, Olivia Hayes stood completely alone, completely secure, and completely free—ready to write every single page of her future on her own terms.
