Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Robert Green

The courtroom erupted into a chaotic murmur of whispers and gasps. Judge Harrison banged his heavy wooden gavel three sharp times, the sharp echoes cutting through the noise instantly.
"Order! Order in the courtroom!" Judge Harrison commanded, his stern eyes locked directly on the defense table before shifting to the trembling witness on the stand. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the bench. "Mr. Pendelton, is your client prepared to contest the authenticity of Exhibit A?"
Pendelton stammered, frantically flipping through his own legal briefs. "Your... Your Honor, we need a recess. We have not been provided prior discovery regarding—"
"You were provided complete discovery pursuant to military rules of civil and criminal procedure incorporated into this proceeding, Counsel," Heidi interrupted smoothly, stepping forward. "Furthermore, that document bears the electronic verification seal of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, alongside Mr. Green’s verified digital signature and corporate stamp."
Heidi turned back to the witness stand, where Bob was now clutching the wooden armrests so tightly his knuckles had turned stark white. Sweat was beginning to bead along his hairline, soaking into his freshly styled graying hair.
"Let's move on to Exhibit B, Dad," Heidi said, her voice dropping to a low, lethal purr.
She flipped another page in the massive black binder.
"This is an affidavit from Ms. Barbara Wilson, former chief bookkeeper of Green Construction," Heidi continued, reading directly from the paper. "It details how, eighteen months ago, under direct orders from Mr. Robert Green, the internal corporate ledgers were systematically falsified to hide over twelve million dollars in unrecorded cash revenue derived from municipal infrastructure projects across the county."
Bob’s head whipped up, his eyes bulging in sheer, unadulterated panic. "She... she’s a liar!" Bob blurted out, breaking protocol and shouting from the witness stand. "She was fired for incompetence! Those ledgers are forged! You have no proof!"
"Mr. Green!" Judge Harrison warned, his voice like cracking ice. "You are under oath. Outbursts will not help you here. Captain Green, proceed."
Heidi didn't miss a beat. She pulled out yet another document, sliding it across the railing so it rested right in front of Bob’s trembling hands.
"Are those your initials on line 42 of the shadow ledger, Bob?" Heidi asked, using his first name deliberately to strip away any remaining illusion of paternal authority. "Detailing the kickbacks paid to municipal inspection supervisors to sign off on substandard asphalt specifications for the 5th Street expansion project?"
Bob stared down at the paper. His breathing turned ragged and shallow. The expensive Brioni suit suddenly felt like a straitjacket, choking the life out of him. He looked out into the gallery, hoping for support from Tiffany, but Tiffany was already whispering frantically to junior counsel, desperately packing her designer handbag as if preparing to bolt out the back door.
"I... I want my lawyer," Bob stammered, his voice cracking miserably. "I refuse to answer on grounds of self-incrimination."
"A wise choice, Mr. Green," Judge Harrison said coldly, his face set in stone. "Given that you have just committed perjury in a court of record while under oath, not to mention opening yourself up to simultaneous federal investigations for corporate fraud, tax evasion, and municipal corruption."
Pendelton collapsed back into his seat, burying his face in his hands. He knew career suicide when he saw it. Bob Green had not only lied to the court; he had dragged his entire legal team down into the gutter with him by concealing criminal acts of tax fraud and money laundering.
"Your Honor," Heidi said, standing tall and proud in her military uniform. "In light of the petitioner’s perjury and documented concealment of millions of dollars in marital and corporate assets, we move for an immediate emergency freeze on all accounts held by Green Construction and Greenfield International Holdings Ltd., an immediate attachment of all personal properties belonging to Mr. Robert Green, and a comprehensive award of 100% of disclosed and concealed marital assets to Mrs. Martha Green, alongside full coverage of all accrued medical and legal expenses."
Judge Harrison didn't even hesitate for a second. He picked up his gavel, struck it down once with a resounding, final thud.
"Motion granted in full," Judge Harrison declared. "Mr. Robert Green, you are remanded to the custody of the federal marshals pending a criminal grand jury indictment for perjury, tax evasion, and fraud. Court is adjourned."

Before Bob could even stand up, two uniformed federal marshals stepped out from the side doors of the courtroom, walked up to the witness stand, and placed cold, heavy steel handcuffs around Bob Green’s expensive, custom-tailored wrists.
As they hauled him away in disgrace, Bob caught one final glimpse of his daughter. Heidi stood motionless, her expression completely serene, holding the heavy black binder against her chest like a shield of absolute justice.
