Chapter 8 - The Preparations

The days leading up to Friday felt like a countdown to a seismic event.
In the Sterling household—or rather, at Richard and his wife Elizabeth’s sprawling estate on the north side of the city—preparations were underway of a very different kind. Unlike Brooke’s sterile, high-stress wedding planning, Elizabeth Sterling approached Friday night with warmth, intention, and radical hospitality.
Two days before the dinner, Elizabeth personally drove out to Sarah’s house with a box of sensory-friendly tools, a menu plan designed specifically around Ruby’s safe foods, and a custom-tailored lavender dress that looked remarkably like the one Ruby had taped to her pantry cabinet—only this one was made from a cotton-silk blend with zero itchy seams or tags.
"I heard about the dress on the pantry door," Elizabeth had said softly, handing the garment bag to Ruby, who stared at it in stunned silence. "Every little girl deserves to wear her special dress, Ruby. Even if she didn't get to wear it at a party that didn't deserve her."
Ruby had hugged Elizabeth fiercely—an unprompted physical affection that made Sarah’s eyes sting with sudden tears.
Meanwhile, Sarah’s parents were in full panic mode. Eleanor called Sarah seven times a day, alternating between begging Sarah to "coach" her on how to apologize and furiously complaining that it was "humiliating" for adults to bow down to a child.
"You don't understand how this looks for us, Sarah!" Eleanor had wailed into the phone on Thursday afternoon. "Richard Sterling is making us bend the knee! People are going to talk!"
"Then don't come, Mom," Sarah had replied calmly. "Nobody is forcing you. You can stay home, watch your business go under, and let Brooke handle her divorce alone. It's entirely your choice."
Unsurprisingly, fear of financial ruin proved to be a far stronger motivator than maternal pride. By Friday evening, all of them—Eleanor, Walter, Brooke, and Dave—were dressed in their finest formal wear, standing nervously in the grand foyer of Richard Sterling’s mansion, waiting for Sarah, Owen, and Ruby to arrive.
When Sarah’s car pulled up to the circular driveway, Nathan was the one waiting by the front steps.
He didn't look like a corporate heir tonight. He looked tired, humbled, and deeply remorseful. When Sarah parked the car, Nathan hurried over, opened the passenger door, and stood back respectfully.
Ruby stepped out first, wearing her new lavender cotton-silk dress. She looked around at the towering stone pillars of the estate, her fingers twitching slightly at her side.
Nathan dropped to one knee on the gravel driveway.
"Hello, Ruby," Nathan said, his voice gentle and steady. "I’m Nathan. I want to tell you how sorry I am for what happened. I didn't know you weren't invited to the wedding, and the moment I found out, I made sure everyone knew it was wrong. You are always welcome around me. Always."
Ruby looked down at him, studying his face with her intense, searching gaze. After a long moment, she reached out and touched the sleeve of his jacket.

"You have nice buttons," Ruby said solemnly.
Nathan let out a breath that sounded half-laugh, half-sob. "Thank you, Ruby. They're yours if you want them."
