Chapter 6 - The Ten-Minute Ultimatum

The tension in the private staging room was so dense it felt physical, like an atmospheric pressure drop right before a violent summer storm. Curt looked down at the old wedding invitation resting on the mahogany table, his brow furrowing deeply as he recognized the vintage calligraphy and the date from nearly a decade ago.

“What is this?” Curt asked, glancing from the invitation to Ashley, whose face had gone completely pale beneath her professionally applied foundation. “Kathy, what’s going on? Why are you dragging up our wedding invitation?”

Ashley rushed forward, her voice pitching up in frantic desperation. “She’s unhinged, Curt! Look at her! She’s having a total mental breakdown because Haley accidentally spilled some punch on her cheap, homemade dress. She’s trying to sabotage our day out of pure jealousy!”

Curt didn't immediately buy the diversion. His eyes flicked back to the thick, facedown plastic folder resting beside the invitation. As a corporate consultant accustomed to analyzing data and sniffing out corporate malfeasance, Curt possessed an innate radar for evasion. He looked at Ashley’s trembling hands and her mother’s panicked, darting eyes, and a cold realization began to form in his chest.

“If there is nothing important inside that folder,” Curt said slowly, his voice eerily calm, “then why don't you let me open it, Ashley?”

Ashley remained completely motionless, her breath coming in short, shallow gasps. She looked like a trapped animal cornered by a predator it had underestimated for far too long.

The digital timer on the table ticked relentlessly downward.

Eight minutes.

Seven minutes.

Realizing her usual tactics of emotional manipulation were failing, Ashley spun around and grabbed her mother’s arm. “Mom! Say something! Tell her to stop this!”

Kathy’s mother immediately stepped into the breach, her maternal instincts kicking in not to protect truth or justice, but to salvage the family's fragile illusion of perfection. She threw her hands out in a placating gesture toward Curt.

“Curt, sweetheart, please,” Mom pleaded, her voice trembling with manufactured distress. “You have to understand. Ashley was going through a very difficult psychological period back then. She was stressed about the wedding, feeling overwhelmed—people make mistakes when they're young!”

The room went dead silent. The air seemed to be sucked entirely out of the space.

Curt slowly turned his head away from his mother-in-law, his gaze locking onto his wife with terrifying intensity.

“Back then?” Curt repeated, each word dropping like a lead weight onto the hardwood floor. He looked from Mom to Ashley, his eyes wide with sudden, sickening comprehension. “What happened back then? What are you talking about?”

Before Ashley could invent another lie, Kathy’s father slipped quietly toward the door, his hand reaching for the brass knob. “We are not doing this,” Dad barked, his voice tight with authoritarian panic. “We have a wedding ceremony starting in minutes. This is completely inappropriate.”

Curt’s voice dropped an octave, turning into a low, menacing growl that stopped the older man dead in his tracks.

“Doing what?” Curt demanded, stepping directly into his father-in-law’s path. “What does everyone in this room know except me? What have you all been hiding from me for nine years?”

Six minutes remained on the timer.

Driven by blind panic, Ashley lunged forward, clawing at the table in an attempt to snatch the evidence folder and sweep it off the edge.

Kathy moved with lightning speed. She slammed her palm down flat over the top of the folder, pinning it securely to the mahogany surface.

“The ten-minute offer was for voluntary honesty, Ashley,” Kathy said, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. “Stealing the evidence was never part of the agreement.”

That was the exact moment Ashley’s carefully constructed fortress of lies completely and catastrophically collapsed.
