Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Vanessa Hale entered the grand library of the Whitmore estate looking like an entirely different person from the glamorous, confident mistress who had stood beside Ethan forty-eight hours earlier.

Her designer sunglasses sat crookedly atop her head, failing to conceal the dark circles beneath her swollen eyes. Her designer linen dress was rumpled, and she carried her oversized handbag like a shield pressed against her abdomen.

“Claire,” Vanessa began, her voice trembling with an expertly calibrated blend of humility and vulnerability. “Thank you for seeing me. I know... I know you hate me. I know you think I’m a terrible person. But I came here woman to woman.”

Claire sat behind the massive mahogany desk, her hands folded neatly over the closed manila folder. She didn't offer Vanessa a seat. She didn't offer her water.

“You have five minutes, Vanessa. Make it count.”

Vanessa took a tentative step forward, her lower lip quivering. “Ethan is falling apart, Claire. He’s completely broken. He’s staying in that awful motel, his mother is losing her mind, and his company is gone. But I’m thinking about the child. *His* child. A baby shouldn't have to suffer for the mistakes of its parents.”

“Fascinating premise,” Claire replied coolly. “What exactly are you proposing?”

Vanessa took a deep, shuddering breath, stepping closer to the desk. “I know you have control of Helios’s bank accounts. I know you froze the consulting payments. But if you drop the fraud lawsuit against my agency, I will take the baby and leave the state tomorrow. Ethan will never hear from me again. You can have him back. You can rebuild your life with him without the shame of his infidelity hanging over you.”

Claire stared at her for five long seconds. Then, slowly, a cold, genuine smile touched her lips.

“You really think this is about winning Ethan back?” Claire asked softly. “You think that after seven years of being neglected, insulted, and betrayed, my ultimate goal is to win back a cowardly, incompetent mama's boy who couldn't even run a software company without stealing from his own investors?”

Vanessa blinked, thrown completely off balance by Claire’s reaction. “He’s... he’s the father of my baby! He has a duty to provide! But if you don't want him, then at least provide a settlement for the child! Two million dollars. That’s all I’m asking. Two million dollars from the Sovereign Trust, and I sign a non-disclosure agreement. I disappear forever.”

“Two million dollars,” Claire repeated thoughtfully. She tapped her fingers against the desk. “That’s a very specific number, Vanessa. Is that how much Marcus Trent owes his bookies in Miami?”

Every drop of air left Vanessa’s lungs.

The color vanished from her face so rapidly she looked as if she were about to faint. She stumbled backward, bumping against the edge of a leather armchair, her eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror.

“What... what did you say?” she whispered.

Claire picked up the manila folder and tossed it across the desk. The contents spilled open, scattering the Coral Gables ultrasound reports, the flight manifests, and the high-resolution photographs of Vanessa kissing Marcus Trent outside a luxury hotel across the polished wood.

“Marcus Trent,” Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying clarity. “Twenty-one weeks pregnant. Not ten. Not Ethan’s.”

Vanessa dropped to her knees.

It was not a theatrical gesture this time. Her legs simply failed her. She stared at the photographs scattered across the carpet, her chest heaving as hyperventilation took hold of her.

“How... how did you...”

“Did you really think that because Ethan was blind, everyone around him was an idiot?” Claire asked, rising from her chair and walking around the desk to look down at the kneeling woman. “Did you really think you could walk into this town, target my marriage, exploit my family’s tragedy with fertility, and walk away with two million dollars of my grandfather’s money?”

“Please,” Vanessa choked, tears streaming down her face, ruining what was left of her makeup. “Please, Claire... don't tell Ethan. If he finds out, he’ll kill me. He has nothing left! He’s crazy right now! If he finds out the baby isn't his, he’ll—”

“Ethan isn't going to kill anyone,” Claire interrupted ruthlessly. “Ethan doesn't have the spine for violence. But he is going to find out. In fact, he’s going to find out in approximately twenty minutes.”

Vanessa grabbed the hem of Claire’s trousers, her fingers digging in with frantic desperation. “Don't! I’ll leave! I’ll pack my car and drive back to Florida right now! I won't take a dime! Just don't release those medical files! If Marcus finds out I tried to claim the baby was Ethan’s for a payout, his associates will hunt me down!”

Claire stepped back, smoothly pulling her fabric from Vanessa’s grasp.

“You should have thought about Marcus Trent’s associates before you decided to play high-society games in my city, Vanessa,” Claire said coldly. “Now, get off my floor. If you are still on this property in three minutes, Rossi will hand these files directly to the local press corps waiting outside the gates.”

Vanessa didn't say another word.

May you like

She scrambled to her feet, abandoning her pride, her handbag, and her dignity, and sprinted through the library doors, her frantic sobs echoing down the grand hallway until the heavy front doors slammed shut behind her.
