Chapter 7 - The DNA Verdict

The official laboratory results arrived on a crisp Tuesday morning in November. Jonathan Vance called me into his office to review the sealed envelope.
As expected, the probability of paternity for both Luke and Owen was 99.999%. Mark Vance was their biological father.
When the news broke to Mark’s legal team, any lingering delusions of contesting paternity vanished instantly. His attorneys immediately pushed for a comprehensive custody and visitation agreement, hoping to secure joint legal and physical custody to salvage what little fatherly image Mark had left.
Jonathan looked across his desk at me, sliding the legal proposal toward my side. “They’re asking for 50/50 shared parenting, alternating weeks, and joint decision-making.”
I shook my head firmly. “Absolutely not. Mark has been a stranger to these boys for three years. He hasn't changed a diaper, wiped a tear, or read a bedtime story. Dropping them into a hostile shared custody arrangement with a father they don't know—and a household in total chaos—would be deeply damaging to them.”
“Then we counter,” Jonathan smiled grimly. “We start with supervised visitation at a neutral child-development center, gradual step-up plans over six months, child support calculated at maximum statutory levels, and strict clauses regarding his personal life and introduction of third parties.”
When Mark received our counterproposal, his lawyer called an emergency mediation session.
The mediation room at the courthouse was small, gray, and stiflingly hot. Mark sat across the table with his attorney, looking haggard, his suit rumpled, dark circles shadowing his eyes. He looked up as I entered with Jonathan, his expression a turbulent mix of desperation and lingering pride.
“Claire, please,” Mark muttered as soon as we sat down. “Let’s not drag this through a public trial. I want to be a father to my boys. I’ll give you whatever financial support you want. Just let me see them.”

“This isn't about what you want, Mark,” I said, looking him dead in the eyes with absolute serenity. “This is about what is safe and stable for Luke and Owen. You spent years weaponizing my body and my grief to make yourself feel superior. You tried to humiliate me in front of everyone I knew. I survived your cruelty, and I built a wonderful life for my children without you. You will earn your place in their lives slowly, under strict supervision, and on my terms.”
Mark swallowed hard, his jaw tightening, but for the first time in our history, he had no clever retort. He nodded slowly, defeated by his own past actions.
