Chapter 7 - The Closing Net

While peace was slowly beginning to take root inside the farmhouse, the outside world was rapidly closing in around Gregory Vance.

Two days after Samantha’s return, the inevitable legal hammer fell. It was mid-morning when two unmarked county sheriff vehicles pulled up directly in front of the sleek glass-and-steel high-rise office building in the city where Greg’s financial firm was headquartered. Detectives marched past the security desk, bypassed the corporate receptionists, and walked straight into the executive bullpen where Greg was leading a client conference call.

"Gregory Vance?" the lead detective asked, his voice echoing loudly across the open-plan office.

Greg looked up, his face flushing crimson with sudden embarrassment as dozens of high-powered colleagues turned to stare. "Yes? What is the meaning of this? I'm in the middle of a meeting—"

"You are being placed under arrest for industrial computer tampering, malicious property sabotage, and attempted fraud," the detective interrupted, stepping forward and clicking the cold steel handcuffs around Greg’s manicured wrists.

"This is a mistake! Do you know who my lawyers are? Do you know who my clients are?" Greg shouted, panicking as he was hauled backward out of his executive chair, his tailored designer suit twisting awkwardly around his arms.

"We know exactly who you are, Mr. Vance," the detective replied coldly. "And your financial backers at Apex Capital already terminated your employment five minutes ago when we presented them with your digital sabotage logs."

The humiliation was absolute, public, and irreversible. Stripped of his high-paying job, his social status, his elite network, and his grand scheme to steal an eight-million-dollar vineyard estate, Greg was led out of the building in handcuffs, flashing cameras from local media outlets capturing every single agonizing second. The empire of arrogance he had built on sand had finally washed away completely.

Back at the valley vineyard, Ben brought the morning newspaper into the farmhouse kitchen, tossing it onto the oak table with a satisfied grin.

"Well, boss, looks like justice moves a little faster in the city than we thought," Ben chuckled, pointing at the front-page digital screenshot of Greg being led out of his office in handcuffs.

Andrea glanced down at the headline—Prominent City Financial Executive Arrested in Vineyard Sabotage Scandal—and let out a quiet, measured sigh. There was no joy in her heart over Greg's downfall, only a profound sense of closure. The poison had been purged from her life, and the estate could finally breathe again.

"Thank you, Ben," Andrea said, sliding the paper aside. "Let’s focus on the crush. The harvest waits for no one."

Over the next week, Samantha threw herself entirely into the grueling, honest work of the vineyard. Gone were the designer clothes, the manicured nails, and the superficial airs. Dressed in durable denim, work boots, and a canvas jacket just like her mother's, Samantha worked side by side with the seasonal crews, hauling grape crates, cleaning fermentation tanks, and learning the true, unglamorous value of the land that had raised her. The physical labor was exhausting, but for the first time in her adult life, Samantha felt a genuine sense of purpose and self-respect.

Mother and daughter spent their evenings at the heavy oak table, not arguing about social standing or wedding optics, but reviewing harvest yields, sharing simple meals, and rebuilding the broken foundation of their relationship brick by honest brick.
