Chapter 5 - The Aftermath in the City

While peace settled over the small brick house on Maple Street, the high-society world of downtown Manhattan was experiencing a seismic tremor.

News in the upper echelons of corporate finance didn't travel through gossip columns; it traveled through algorithmic trading alerts, emergency board calls, and frantic whispers whispered behind closed doors at exclusive clubs. By the morning of December 26th, the financial district was buzzing with a single, electrifying headline: Sterling Holdings Implodes; Federal Investigation Targets Arthur Sterling.

Inside a cramped, temporary apartment on the Upper East Side—rented on short notice after the security detail at the suburban estate literally changed the locks and escorted her off the property with two suitcases—Bellamy Sterling sat staring blankly at her phone screen.

The screen was dark.

For the past twelve hours, she had dialed every phone number in her contact list. Former friends from the Junior League, gallery owners, charity gala chairs, high-society wives who used to fawn over her invitations to the annual Christmas gala—every single one of them either sent her calls straight to voicemail or answered with cold, clipped professional distance before hanging up.

In high society, poverty was a minor inconvenience, but scandal was a contagious disease. And financial ruin mixed with federal criminal indictments was terminal.

The doorbell of the temporary apartment buzzed sharply.

Bellamy jumped, her heart hammering against her ribs. For a fraction of a second, a desperate, irrational hope flared in her chest. Maybe Byron changed his mind. Maybe he realized he couldn't live without her, and he’s coming to take her back to the mansion.

She hurried across the hardwood floor, unlocked the door, and flung it open.

It wasn't Byron.

It was Julian.

Her brother looked like a ghost. His expensive designer suit was rumpled, his tie was undone, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his bloodshot eyes. He shoved past her into the tiny entryway without waiting for an invitation, dropping a heavy leather garment bag onto the floor.

“They froze everything, Bellamy,” Julian said, his voice shaking with panic as he paced back and forth across the small living room. “Every single corporate account, every personal trust fund, Dad’s retirement portfolio—all frozen by court order at midnight. The DOJ is auditing every wire transfer Sterling Holdings made since 2018.”

Bellamy closed the door slowly, leaning back against the wood as her knees began to buckle. “Where’s Dad? Where are Mom and Dad?”

“Dad is locked in his study with three high-priced defense lawyers who already told him they won't take retainer unless we pay five hundred thousand dollars cash upfront,” Julian laughed bitterly, a harsh, hysterical sound. “Cash! Do you know how much liquid cash we have right now between the two of us? About twelve thousand dollars in a checking account that’s probably going to be subpoenaed by noon!”

Bellamy stared at her brother, her mind desperately trying to bridge the gap between their reality yesterday morning and the apocalyptic wasteland they were standing in today.

“It’s all her fault,” Bellamy whispered, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. Her fingernails dug into the palms of her hands until the skin turned white. “It’s that old woman. If she hadn't spilled that stupid coffee… if she had just stayed in her place where she belonged…”

Julian stopped pacing and stared at his sister with a look of pure, unadulterated disbelief.

“Are you completely insane, Bellamy?” Julian snapped, his voice rising sharply. “You slapped Vance’s mother across the face on camera! In front of twenty witnesses! Did you honestly think a man worth four billion dollars was going to sit there and let you humiliate his mother like a common servant?”

“I am his wife!” Bellamy shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. “I gave him social standing! I introduced him to our circle! He was nobody from the suburbs before we elevated him!”

“He built Vance Technologies from his garage before you even knew what a server was!” Julian roared back, his face flushing red. “We didn't elevate him, Bellamy—we tried to trap him, and he outsmarted us every single step of the way! He laid a trap for us years ago, and you walked right into it with your eyes wide open because you were too arrogant to realize that the 'old woman' you treated like a maid was the only person in this family he actually gave a damn about!”

May you like

The harsh truth of her brother’s words struck Bellamy like a physical blow. She staggered backward, her breath catching in her throat as the full, terrifying magnitude of her actions crashed down upon her.

She was broke. She was disgraced. She was legally cast out. And the man she had looked down upon with such casual contempt for five years was now the master of her entire existence.
