Chapter 8 - The Return of the Recipe Box

By summer, the divorce was finalized.

Brooke had packed up her remaining designer goods and moved across state lines to live with a new partner she met through her online network, quickly rebranding her page around a glossy, high-end "single mom entrepreneur" aesthetic. She never called, never apologized, and never looked back. Which was entirely fine by me. Some chapters of your life are meant to be closed, shredded, and thrown into the recycling bin.

The Elm Street house was quiet again. Not the heavy, suffocating silence of Brooke’s reign, but the peaceful, breathing silence of a home at peace with its history.

One afternoon, I was preparing for a small family dinner. Daniel was bringing over a few old friends from his high school days—good, grounded people who remembered when we used to bake chocolate cakes on Sunday afternoons without worrying about lighting or camera angles.

I opened the drawer beside the stove, reached in, and pulled out the small wooden recipe box.

As I lifted the brass clasp, the familiar scent of old paper, vanilla, and dried cinnamon drifted up. I flipped through the cards until I found my mother’s lemon pie recipe.

The handwriting was faded, written in elegant cursive on cardstock yellowed by time. But every stroke of the pen carried a legacy that no viral video, no black trash bag, and no arrogant daughter-in-law could ever erase.

The back door clicked open, and heavy footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor.

“Mom? I brought the cider!” Daniel called out, walking into the kitchen with a jug in each hand.

“On the counter, honey!” I called back, sliding the recipe card into its slot.

Daniel walked over, peered into the open recipe box, and smiled softly. “Lemon pie?”

May you like

“Of course,” I said, closing the box and turning to face him. “It wouldn't be Sunday without it.”

He grinned, reaching out to steal a spoonful of sugar from the bowl just like his father used to do thirty years ago. I slapped his hand away with a dish towel, laughing out loud—a sound that echoed off the high ceilings of the kitchen, filling every corner of the house with life, warmth, and light.
