Chapter 45 - The Zurich Protocol

The air in the subterranean gallery grew noticeably thinner.

"What are you talking about?" Vane demanded, the warmth dropping from his voice entirely.

I pulled the titanium card from my pocket and laid it precisely in the center of the marble table, directly between the two lead-sealed folios.

"Three months ago, before Paul ever served his first subpoena," I said, "I realized that Mill Creek’s toxic paper trail was too clean. The balance sheets were bleeding interest into an account that cleared through the Bank for International Settlements in Basel. I didn't just audit the family companies, Father. I shorted the clearing mechanism."

Vane froze. His eyes dropped to the titanium card.

"You shorted... Protocol Zero?"

"I borrowed against the sovereign firebreak clearance issued by the United States Treasury," I explained, leaning in until I could see the tiny broken veins in the old man's sclera. "Every shell corporation Paul claimed was 'family property' had already been stripped of its real value and converted into credit default swaps tied to the Vatican's unhedged bond portfolio. When your automated terminal at Lake George flared amber, it didn't activate my compliance. It executed my margin call."

A sharp ping echoed from the console embedded in the wall behind Vane.

The archivist rushed to the small monitor, his fingers frantically tapping at the keys. He gasped, his face blanching white.

"Monsieur le Chanoine..." the archivist stammered. "The Basel node... it’s reporting an instantaneous liquidity freeze. Our custodial accounts at Roth-Vane have been locked under an emergency OFAC sanction order."

"OFAC?" Vane shrieked, half-rising from his chair. "We are a sovereign religious entity! The Americans have no authority over our Swiss reserves!"

"They don't," I said coldly. "The United States Treasury didn't freeze you. The International Monetary Fund did, based on a forensic filing submitted by the special liquidator of the Mallerie Estate: me."

Suddenly, the heavy iron doors at the rear of the gallery groaned.

Two men dressed in tactical black gear, wearing sterile balaclavas and carrying suppressed submachine guns, stepped into the vaulted hall. Their weapons were raised, tracking directly toward my chest.

"You are very clever, Julian," Vane snarled, his breath coming in shallow gasps. "Very clever indeed. But forensic accounting cannot stop a nine-millimeter hollow point. You do not leave this vault alive unless that margin call is withdrawn."

I didn't flinch. I didn't even turn to face the gunmen.

"Kill me," I said, checking my wristwatch. "It is currently 03:48 GMT. In twelve minutes, my dead-man switch triggers at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The entire unredacted ledger of Protocol Zero will be transmitted to the financial press, the European Central Bank, and the International Criminal Court at The Hague. Every secret account held by this syndicate since 1943 will be public domain by sunrise."

The silence that followed was so absolute that I could hear the microscopic hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
