Chapter 5 - The Serpent’s Threshold

The rain was an overwhelming roar as Adrian, seated once more in his manual transport chair, was wheeled through the pedestrian door of Warehouse 42 by Mateo. I walked closely behind him, my heart hammering against my ribs, the ceramic dagger concealed inside my sleeve.
The warehouse was cavernous, smelling of brine, motor oil, and raw panic. Suspended thirty feet in the air on an industrial iron catwalk, tied to a wooden chair, was my mother. Her head lolled forward, her white hair matted with blood.
"Mom!" I screamed, instinctively surging forward, but Adrian’s arm shot out like an iron bar, blocking my path.
"Stay behind me, Claire," he ordered softly.
Slow clapping echoed from the shadows behind a stack of rusted shipping containers. Victor Marcone stepped into the sickly yellow pool of the floodlights. He was dressed in a pristine white trench coat, an ivory-handled revolver dangling carelessly from his right hand. Flanking him were eight heavily armed mercenaries in tactical gear.
"The great Don Adrian Vale," Victor drawled, a cruel, mocking sneer twisting his lips. "Rolling into his execution like a dog on a leash. Tell me, Adrian, does it hurt? Knowing that the empire your father carved out with fire and blood is going to end because your legs are as useless as rotten wood?"
Adrian didn't blink. His expression remained an unreadable mask of absolute boredom. "You talk too much, Victor. You always did. It’s why your father left the syndicate to your brother before I put him in the river."
Victor’s face contorted with sudden, venomous rage. He raised the revolver, aiming it directly at Adrian's forehead. "Your mother-in-law is tied to thirty pounds of C4, Adrian. The detonator is in my hand. One twitch of my thumb, and her remains will rain down on your pretty wife like confetti."
"What do you want, Victor?" I shouted, desperate tears burning my eyes. "Take the territory! Take the accounts! Just let her down!"
Victor laughed—a harsh, grating sound. "The accounts are already being drained by Harrington's group, darling. What I want is a show. I want to see Adrian crawl. I want him to slide out of that pathetic chair, kiss my boots, and beg me to let you both live."
Adrian tilted his head slightly. "And if I refuse?"
"Then she dies first," Victor said, gesturing toward the catwalk. "Then your wife. And finally, I’ll take my time peeling you apart."
Adrian looked up at the catwalk. Then he looked at Victor.
"You made three fatal mistakes tonight, Victor," Adrian said calmly.
Victor smirked. "Oh? Enlighten me, cripple."
"First, you assumed my wife was a bargaining chip, when in reality, she is the only reason I haven't burned this city to ash." Adrian reached into his pocket and clicked a small remote.

Suddenly, the floodlights high above flickered and exploded into a shower of white sparks, plunging the warehouse into near-total, suffocating darkness.
