Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Downfall

“Who told you Rosa was here, Marco?” I asked softly, my thumb resting on the trigger of my pistol. “She lived in my house for two years without anyone outside knowing. Who gave you her name?”

Marco shook violently, his teeth chattering from pain and sheer terror.

“It... it was an insider!” Marco blurted out, desperate to buy his life. “A broker in New York! A lawyer named Richard Vance! He... he handles your syndicate’s offshore trust accounts!”

Richard Vance.

My heart hardened into steel.

Vance had been my family’s chief legal counsel for a decade. He was the man who managed the staff payroll, who audited the house records, and who had access to the personal background checks of every servant hired at the estate.

Vance had discovered Rosa’s real identity six months ago. Instead of coming to me, he had quietly auctioned the information to the highest bidder in Chicago, waiting for Rosa to die so he could orchestrate a lucrative kidnapping plot.

“Thank you, Marco,” I said quietly.

“You... you’re going to let me go?” Marco stammered, hope flaring in his eyes.

“No,” I replied. “I’m going to send you back to Chicago in a wooden box, so your remaining captains remember what happens when someone looks at my son.”

I nodded to Matteo.

“Clear the driveway. Call Richard Vance. Tell him I need an urgent meeting regarding my estate taxes at 2:00 p.m.”

“Yes, Don Alessandro,” Matteo bowed, pulling the screaming traitor out through the side entrance.
