Chapter 9 - The Return Home

Three weeks later, a sleek black town car rolled through the wrought-iron gates of the Vascari estate on the outskirts of the city.
The sprawling stone mansion, which had sat cold, dark, and abandoned for eight months, was now alive with light. Fires crackled in the stone fireplaces, and fresh white lilies filled the grand foyer.
Dominic stepped out of the passenger side first, the crisp autumn wind catching the lapels of his charcoal coat. He walked around to the passenger door, opening it with deliberate care.
Mara stepped out onto the gravel driveway, holding a small, cream-colored car seat cradling a sleeping Elena.
She paused, looking up at the imposing facade of the mansion. Memories of the night she had packed her bags in the middle of a freezing rainstorm rushed back—the suffocating loneliness, the terror of carrying a secret life alone in the world, the painful heartbreak of walking away from the only man she had ever loved.
Dominic noticed the hesitation. He stepped close, wrapping a strong, warm arm around her waist, pulling her gently against his side.
“Welcome home, tesoro,” he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head.
Mara turned her face up, looking at him with a tender, quiet smile. She didn't feel the old fear anymore. The ghosts of the past had been laid to rest, swept away by the brutal efficiency of a man who had finally learned that his greatest strength wasn't his power, but his family.
“Let’s go inside,” Mara said softly.
They walked up the stone steps together, the heavy oak doors opening wide before them as Vince and a pair of new, trusted security guards bowed their heads in quiet respect.
Inside, the house was warm, quiet, and peaceful.
Dominic gently lifted the infant carrier from Mara’s arms, carrying his daughter into the newly renovated nursery painted in soft shades of cream and lavender. He set the bassinet down beside a plush rocking chair near the bay window.
Elena stirred slightly, letting out a soft, tiny sigh before settling back into a deep, untroubled sleep.
Mara walked up behind Dominic, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her face gently against his broad back. Dominic turned around, pulling her into his arms and burying his face in her dark hair, breathing in the familiar scent of lavender and rain.
