Chapter 3 - The Assembly of Shadows

Over the next four days, I played the part of the unsuspecting, overworked empire builder.
I attended dinners with Margaret Ashford at her Beacon Hill townhome, listening to her talk about family heritage and charity galas while I drank her vintage wine and complimented her silver.
I met with Preston in my boardroom, signing routine documents he pushed across the table, nodding along as he explained complex legal structures meant to "protect my legacy."
What Preston didn't know was that every single page he gave me was photographed by a micro-lens embedded in my fountain pen and transmitted directly to a team of five independent corporate lawyers in Zurich.
By Friday night, Dominic met me in a subterranean vault beneath one of my shipping warehouses in South Boston.
The walls were covered in digital monitors, displaying financial networks, offshore wire transfers, and private communications.
"It's worse than we thought, Mr. Moretti," Dominic said, pulling up a global bank map. "Preston didn't act alone. He's been using your capital to fund short-positions against your own publicly traded logistics subsidiaries. Once they trigger your incapacity clause, your stock will crash by forty percent. His syndicate plans to buy up the floating shares at pennies on the dollar, giving them eighty percent control of Moretti Enterprises."
"And Margaret?" I asked.
"Margaret's Beacon Hill estate is mortgaged to the hilt," Dominic showed a series of court filings. "She owes twelve million dollars to a private equity lender in London. Preston guaranteed her debt using a fraudulent lien against your real estate holdings in Miami."
I looked at the interconnected webs of greed.
"They didn't just want my money," I observed coldly. "They wanted to bleed the carcass clean."
"What are your orders, boss?" Dominic asked, his hands resting on his belt. "We can make Preston and Margaret disappear tonight. A boat ride off the coast of Cape Cod. Clean, quiet."
I looked at him and smiled—a slow, terrifying smile that made even Dominic straighten up.
"Violence is for amateurs, Dominic," I said softly. "If I kill them, I become a monster who validated their fears. If I destroy them legally, financially, and socially... they will spend the rest of their lives wishing I had shot them."

"What's the play?"
"We let them think their plan is working," I said. "We give them the exact stage they prepared. And when they step up to take the bow... we remove the floor."
