Chapter 8 - Kayla’s Redemption & The Sting

On Wednesday afternoon, twenty-four hours before our court hearing, my hospital room phone rang.
It was Evelyn Vance, my attorney.
"Hannah, I have someone in my office who insists on speaking with you," Evelyn said, her tone sharp and businesslike. "Kayla Thompson came in twenty minutes ago with her personal attorney."
I felt my jaw tighten. "I told her I had nothing left to say to her."
"You don't have to talk to her," Evelyn replied. "But you need to hear what she brought us. Ryan contacted her last night after your post went viral."
"What did he want?"
"He wanted her to sign an affidavit stating that the Lakeview Heights lease was a commercial co-investment on behalf of her marketing firm, and that their relationship was strictly professional. He offered her twenty thousand dollars in cash—drawn from a hidden offshore account in the Caymans that was never disclosed in your marital filings."
I sat up straight, holding the receiver tightly against my ear. "A hidden account?"
"Ryan thought he was smart," Evelyn said with a grim chuckle. "He set up a shell entity two years ago under the name *Apex Horizons LLC*. Kayla knew about it because he used her personal address to receive the corporate registration mailings back in 2024, telling her it was a tax strategy for his freelance consulting."
"Is she willing to testify?"
"She's willing to do more than testify," Evelyn said. "She agreed to wear a wire for an undercover recording supervised by a private forensic investigator this evening. She’s meeting Ryan at a coffee shop near the courthouse under the pretense of signing the affidavit and collecting the cash."
I took a deep breath. "Put her on the phone."
There was a brief pause, followed by the sound of the receiver shifting hands. When Kayla spoke, her voice was choked with tears.
"Hannah?"
"Kayla."
"I don't expect you to forgive me," Kayla sobbed. "I know I ruined our friendship. I know I was stupid, selfish, and disgusting. But when I saw that post... when I saw the documents where he planned to take your baby away... I realized he was never going to love me. He was going to destroy me the exact same way he destroyed you."
"Why are you doing this, Kayla?" I asked quietly.
"Because it’s the only way I can ever look at myself in the mirror again," she replied. "I’m going to make sure he goes down for every single lie he told. Both of us."
"Be careful," was all I said before hanging up.
At 6:30 PM, the sting took place.
Kayla sat in the corner of a dimly lit Starbucks on Water Street, a high-gain digital recording device concealed inside her designer handbag. Ryan arrived wearing dark sunglasses and a baseball cap pulled low over his forehead, looking like a hunted man.
For forty-five minutes, Ryan laid out his entire criminal enterprise.
He admitted on tape that the forty-eight thousand dollars taken from Ella’s account was deliberately shifted to make me appear financially destitute if I tried to hire an attorney.
He admitted that *Apex Horizons LLC* held over one hundred and forty thousand dollars in undeclared assets intended to shield his wealth during the divorce proceedings.
And, most damning of all, he laughed on the recording as he explained how he had manipulated Kayla:
*"Look, Kayla, you're a pretty girl, but you knew what this was. I needed a clean front to secure the lease, and you needed a guy with status. Now sign the damn affidavit, take the twenty grand, and let me crush Hannah in court tomorrow. Once the judge sees she’s an unstable basket case, I get primary custody, the house, and the trust money. You and I can figure out the rest later."*
Kayla didn't sign the affidavit.
Instead, she stood up, picked up her bag, and walked out the door directly into the waiting vehicle of Evelyn Vance’s chief investigator.

Ryan was left sitting alone at the table, clutching an envelope of untraceable cash, completely unaware that his voice was already being transcribed for a circuit court judge.
