Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Estate

The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon when my truck, followed closely by Marcus Vance’s sedan and a marked cruiser driven by Sgt. Miller, turned up the maple-lined driveway of the Weller estate.
We weren't there to sneak around or beg. We had a court order, a certified digital forensic extraction report, and two county sheriff deputies armed with arrest warrants for Martin Weller.
I cut the engine and stepped out into the crisp evening air, my boots crunching on the gravel. Marcus stepped out beside me, carrying a heavy leather briefcase containing the official court-stamped dissolution of the emergency custody order and the digital evidence packet.
We walked up the grand stone steps of the front porch. I didn't bother knocking politely this time. I raised my fist and hammered three heavy, resounding blows against the thick mahogany door.
Within seconds, the door swung open.
Martin Weller stood in the doorway, wearing his cashmere sweater, looking confident and untouchable—until his eyes landed not just on me, but on Marcus Vance and Sgt. Miller standing behind us in uniform.
Martin’s confident smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered his aristocratic composure, stepping out onto the porch and pulling the door half-closed behind him.
"Arthur," Martin said, his voice dripping with condescension. "You really don't know when to quit, do you? I told you—"
"You're done telling people anything, Martin," Marcus interrupted smoothly, stepping forward and flipping open his briefcase to reveal the court-stamped documents and the forensic report summary. "My name is Marcus Vance. We have the cloud-synced metadata copy of Hannah's four-minute video. The judge has vacated your emergency order, and the prosecutor’s office has just issued arrest warrants for felony assault, conspiracy, and fabricating evidence."
Martin’s face drained of color. The arrogance vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, trapped panic. He glanced past us toward the driveway, where Sgt. Miller was stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in the fading twilight.
"That's... that's an absurdity," Martin stammered, his baritone voice cracking for the first time. "A private dispute between family members—"
"Family members don't stage assaults and frame fathers for child custody leverage," Sgt. Miller said flatly, stepping onto the porch and placing a heavy hand on Martin Weller’s expensive cashmere shoulder. "Martin Weller, turn around and place your hands behind your back."
From inside the foyer, the heavy double doors pushed open further, and Hannah stepped out into the hallway, her face stained with tears, holding little Lily by the hand.
Lily took one look at the police officers, then saw me standing on the porch.
"Grandpa!" she cried out, breaking away from Hannah and running across the marble foyer toward the open door.
"Lily!" I dropped to one knee, sweeping my arms wide just as she reached the threshold. She threw her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder, sobbing softly. "Daddy said he was coming to get me... where's Daddy?"
"Daddy's right out in the truck, sweet girl," I whispered, my voice breaking with emotion as I held her tight against my chest, standing up and turning away from the chaos on the porch. "He's waiting for us."
Behind me, Martin Weller was being guided down the stone steps in handcuffs, his high-priced legal career and untouchable social standing crumbling into ruin as the cold Ohio wind swept across the estate.
Hannah stood in the doorway, staring down at her father being led away, then slowly shifted her gaze to meet mine. There was no anger left in her eyes—only the hollow, devastating realization of what she had allowed her father’s toxic ambition to destroy.

"Arthur..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind. "Please... tell Caleb I'm sorry."
I didn't answer her. I turned my back on the grand house, carrying my granddaughter down the steps toward the waiting truck where Caleb sat with the door open, his arms outstretched and tears streaming down his face.
