Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

By 11:30 AM, the emergency hearing in the Albemarle County Circuit Court was over.

Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense jurist who had known my father for thirty years, had reviewed Marcus Hayes’s sworn affidavit, the forged Power of Attorney, and the transcript of the audio recording I had made in Room 817.

His ruling was swift, surgical, and devastating.

An emergency temporary injunction was entered, freezing all domestic bank accounts associated with Daniel Holloway and Meridian Horizon Holdings. A statutory *lis pendens* was placed on Sycamore Ridge, effectively blocking any foreign or domestic lender from foreclosing or attaching liens until a full evidentiary trial could be held.

And finally, Judge Harrison issued a writ of ne exeat—an archaic, powerful court order directing the Albemarle County Sheriff to seize Daniel Thomas Holloway’s passports, both domestic and foreign, immediately upon locating him within the Commonwealth.

"We have the house protected, Claire," Rachel said as we walked down the grand stone steps of the courthouse into the crisp October sunshine. "The Cayman lender can't touch Sycamore Ridge while this injunction stands."

"And the money?" I asked. "The 1.85 million in Belize?"

Rachel’s expression darkened. "That’s the hard part. Belize is an asset-protection fortress. Even with a federal judgment, piercing an offshore trust in Belize takes eighteen months and hundreds of thousands in international litigation fees. Unless we can intercept Daniel before he leaves the country and force him to sign an order of repatriation, that money is effectively gone."

My prepaid burner phone vibrated in my coat pocket.

I stopped on the sidewalk, pulling the cheap plastic device from my pocket. The screen showed an unknown number with a 757 area code—Virginia Beach.

I looked at Rachel. "It’s a 757 number."

"Answer it," Rachel said, stepping close to my shoulder. "Put it on speaker."

I pressed the green button. "Hello?"

"Claire?"

The voice was female, breathless, and surrounded by the low background roar of highway traffic.

*Lauren Pierce.*

I took a breath. "Lauren. Where are you?"

"I'm driving west on Route 60," Lauren said, her voice shaking with panic. "Claire, listen to me. Daniel left the Harbor Grand two hours ago. He went insane after you walked out of the room."

"What did he do?"

"He tried to smash my laptop," Lauren said, her words tumbling over each other. "He accused me of setting him up with you. He said you two had been plotting to trap him. When I tried to leave, he blocked the door. I had to threaten to call hotel security before he finally backed off."

"Where is he now, Lauren?" Rachel interjected, her voice sharp and commanding.

"Who is that?" Lauren asked, startled.

"This is Rachel Vance, Claire’s legal counsel. Where is Daniel going?"

A pause on the line. I heard the click of a turn signal.

"He called his travel broker in New York from the hotel lobby," Lauren said. "I was standing behind a pillar near the elevators. He didn't see me. Claire... he isn't waiting until next Thursday to fly to Zurich."

My heart seized. "What?"

"He moved the flight up," Lauren said. "He knows you have the files. He knows Marcus Hayes won't hold out under pressure. He booked a private charter flight out of Richmond Executive Airport for six o'clock this evening. It connects to an international commercial flight out of Montreal at midnight."

*Tonight.*

"How is he paying for a private charter with his accounts frozen?" Rachel demanded.

"He isn't using a bank wire," Lauren replied. "He kept a private emergency reserve in a safe deposit box at the Dominion Capital Bank branch in downtown Richmond. He told me about it two months ago when we were setting up the corporate filings. He said there's two hundred thousand dollars in gold bearer bonds and fifty thousand in cash in that box. It’s registered under his alias—David Hall."

Rachel and I exchanged a lightning glance.

"Lauren," I said, "why are you telling me this?"

A long silence stretched over the line. When Lauren spoke again, her voice was thick with tears.

"Because when I looked at you in that hallway last night, Claire... holding that anniversary cake... I saw myself in five years. Daniel doesn't love anyone. He uses women as shields. He used you for your family's name and land, and he used me for my credentials. If he gets on that plane tonight, he wins. And I don't want him to win."

"Lauren," I said quietly, "where are you going right now?"

"To my sister's house in Charlotte," she whispered. "I'm turning my phone off. I'm hiring a defense lawyer. I sent a copy of Daniel's encrypted ledger to your personal email address thirty minutes ago. It has the account numbers for the safe deposit box and the signature card scans."

"Thank you, Lauren," I said.

"Good luck, Claire," she whispered. "Be careful. He’s completely desperate."

The line clicked off.

Rachel was already moving down the sidewalk toward her Mercedes, her heels clicking like rifle shots against the concrete.

"Toby!" she barked into her Bluetooth earpiece. "Draft an emergency writ of attachment for Dominion Capital Bank on East Main Street in Richmond! Box number... Claire, what was the box number?"

I pulled up the email on my phone. "Box 414. Dominion Capital Bank, Richmond Downtown Branch."

"Box 414!" Rachel commanded. "Call the bank’s general counsel. Tell them we are en route with an Albemarle County freeze order and a ne exeat warrant! If anyone attempts to access Box 414 under the name Daniel Holloway or David Hall, security is to detain them immediately!"

She unlocked the Mercedes.

"Get in, Claire," Rachel said, slamming her door. "It’s twelve o'clock. We have five hours before Daniel’s charter wheels up."
