Chapter 10 - The Peaceful Dawn

The sun climbed high into the clear blue New York sky, warming the stone patio and casting golden light across the peaceful gardens.
Later that evening, after the girls had finally worn themselves out and drifted off to sleep upstairs, I stood alone on the second-floor balcony, looking out over the sprawling estate as the stars began to emerge across the velvet night.
Footsteps approached softly behind me, and a warm wool throw blanket was gently draped over my shoulders.
I turned my head. Chloe stood beside me, leaning against the wrought-iron railing, looking out at the quiet horizon.
“You’re up late,” she said softly.
“Just thinking,” I replied, resting my hands on the railing. “For fifteen years, I believed that power was the only thing standing between my family and total destruction. I thought if I built the walls high enough and hit back hard enough, the world couldn't touch us.”

“Now I know that walls only keep you trapped with your own ghosts,” I said, looking down at the open courtyard below, where the gates stood wide and welcoming. “True power isn't about fear or control. It’s about being able to look your children in the eye and give them a home where they don't have to be afraid of the dark.”
Chloe smiled, a soft, radiant expression that caught the moonlight. “You did it, Dominic. You brought them home.”
“We did it, Chloe,” I corrected gently, reaching out to take her hand in mine.
She didn't pull away. Her fingers intertwined with mine, warm and steady against the cool night air.
