Chapter 21 - The Bell of the Five Stars

The shockwave knocked me against the safety railing of the catwalk, bruising my ribs. Below, through the dense haze of pulverized concrete and smoke, five figures emerged from the breach.
They wore tailored black trench coats over high-grade carbon-fiber armor. Each of them had a silver mask covering the lower half of their face, stamped with the unmistakable sigil: a crowned dagger surrounded by five stars.
The Supreme Arbiters. The personal guard of the Syndicate’s elusive Sovereign.
"Dante!" I screamed, leaning over the rail.
Dante was already moving. He slid behind a concrete support pillar just as a barrage of armor-piercing rounds chewed the stonework to dust. He fired back with lethal economy, one bullet shattering the eye-lens of the lead Arbiter, dropping the man instantly.
But the remaining four moved with unnatural, synchronized speed. Two of them fanned out with tactical submachine guns, laying down suppressive fire that pinned Dante against the pillar, while the largest among them—a hulking figure wielding a pneumatic combat blade—sprinted straight toward the iron stairs leading to me.
"Inject the compound, Cora!" Dante yelled over the roar of gunfire, his voice strained with absolute desperation. "Don't look down! Do it now!"
My hands shook, but I forced the canister of the Sovereign Breath into the intake chamber. The glass locked into place with a mechanical hiss. I reached for the primary injection lever and pulled down with my entire body weight.
A deep, groaning vibration shuddered through the thirty-foot vat. The fluorescent green glow inside the viewing glass began to shift, clouding into a pale, milky lavender as the neutralizing enzymes tore through the synthetic bonds of the Acheron gas. The digital timer on the console suddenly halted, flashing:
**CONTAMINATION DETECTED. CATALYTIC COLLAPSE IMMINENT. SYSTEM PURGE IN 60 SECONDS.**
"It worked!" I shouted.
A heavy, gloved hand suddenly clamped onto my ankle.
I screamed as the Arbiter pulled me backward, slamming me flat onto the iron catwalk. The canister slipped from my fingers, shattering against the metal grate. The Arbiter’s silver mask tilted up, cold, dead gray eyes staring into mine as he drew a serrated combat knife, raising it above my throat.
Before the blade could fall, an inhuman roar tore through the room.
Dante leaped from the mid-level platform, crashing into the Arbiter with the fury of a wounded tiger. The two men rolled violently across the narrow catwalk, Dante’s hands wrapped around the Arbiter's throat. The knife clattered away, tumbling into the churning chemical vat below.
Dante drove his thumbs into the Arbiter’s eye sockets with ruthless, primal violence until the giant went limp. Dante hurled the corpse over the railing, where it crashed twenty feet below onto the concrete floor.
Dante scrambled to his feet, panting heavily, blood dripping from a deep bullet graze along his temple. He reached out to pull me up, his chest heaving. "Cora... come, we have to get off this platform! The purge is going to flood the chamber!"
He grasped my hand. His fingers were warm, slippery with sweat and blood, but their grip was absolute.
Just as he pulled me to my feet, a sharp, metallic chime echoed over the facility's loudspeakers—the unmistakable resonance of a heavy bronze bell tolling five times.
*The Bell of the Five Stars.*
On the ground floor, the final remaining Arbiter, dying from multiple gunshot wounds in his chest, weakly pressed his palm against an emergency lever embedded in the central console.
**EMERGENCY CONTAINMENT SEAL ACTIVATED. BLAST DOORS ENGAGED.**
Heavy titanium blast doors began slamming down from the ceiling, groaning under hydraulic pressure. But worse—a secondary armored bulkhead began sliding horizontally across the catwalk between the upper platform where I stood and the exit staircase where Dante was anchored.
"No!" Dante roared, throwing himself forward to bridge the gap.
The metal door crashed downward with the force of an avalanche, severing our hands just as our fingers touched.
"Dante!" I threw myself against the reinforced glass viewport of the blast door, pounding on it with my bloody knuckles.
On the other side of the partition, Dante beat his fists against the bulletproof barrier, his face contorted in agony and uncontrolled rage. The veins in his neck bulged, his lips moving against the glass, screaming words that the soundproof titanium swallowed whole.
Above my head, the warning klaxons shifted to a high-pitched, terrifying frequency:
**VENTILATION SEAL FAILURE. CRITICAL PRESSURE ACCUMULATION. DETONATION IN TEN SECONDS.**
Then, from the darkness of the catwalk behind me, a slow, mocking clapping began.
I whipped around, my back slamming against the sealed blast door.
Emerging from the shadows of the upper ventilation duct was a woman in an immaculate pinstripe suit, holding a silver-plated revolver. Her face was identical to the portrait I had seen in my mother’s journal—the sister my mother had believed was murdered thirty years ago.

"You really do have your mother's eyes, little niece," the woman whispered, raising the gun directly at my forehead as the final countdown hit three seconds. "It's a pity you won't live to see our family's true empire rise."
On the other side of the glass, Dante pulled a block of thermal C4 from his vest, his eyes burning with a promise of apocalypse as the timer struck zero.
