Chapter 16 - Midnight at Martinsburg

The abandoned airfield in Martinsburg lay nestled between two wooded ridges, shrouded in absolute darkness. Rain had turned to a light, freezing drizzle that coated the broken asphalt in a thin layer of black ice.

At 2330 hours, our seven-man tactical team took up positions along the treeline bordering the single cracked runway. We wore sterile black uniforms without rank insignia or American flags. This was a ghost operation.

A private Gulfstream jet sat near an open hangar, its auxiliary power unit whining softly in the cold air. Two cargo vans were parked near the cargo bay, their doors open. Men in heavy jackets were rapidly transferring aluminum crates into the belly of the aircraft.

Through the scope of my suppressed rifle, I spotted Captain Thorne standing on the runway, checking his watch under the glare of a halogen work light. Beside him stood Miller, a submachine gun slung across his chest.

"Bravo Team in position at the hangar perimeter," a whisper came through the bone-conduction earpiece.

"Sniper team green. Alpha team ready on your go, Commander," another voice reported.

I raised my hand, checking the wind. We had one chance to secure the cargo and capture Thorne alive. If the jet spooled up, we’d have to take out the engines, risking a catastrophic fuel explosion that would destroy the evidence.

"Move in," I whispered. "Suppress and breach. Non-lethal on Thorne if possible."

We stepped out of the shadows like phantoms, boots gliding soundlessly over the wet tarmac.

Fifty yards. Forty yards.

Suddenly, an alarm klaxon blared from inside the hangar. A perimeter motion sensor had tripped.

"Ambush!" Miller screamed, swinging his weapon toward the treeline.

The silence exploded into thunderous gunfire.
