Chapter 6 - Blood and Paper

With Adrian permanently locked in the maximum-security wing of MDC Brooklyn with no possibility of bail, the second phase of my investigation shifted from corporate survival to pure forensic retribution.

In the private study of our Bedford home, Marcus Cross sat across from me, reviewing a thick stack of medical files stamped with red *CONFIDENTIAL* seals.

“The toxicology came back from the state lab an hour ago,” Marcus said, rubbing his tired eyes. “Your suspicions were spot on, Clara. The beta-blocker prescription your father was taking wasn't metoprolol. It was a synthesized digitalis derivative. Slow, cumulative, almost impossible to detect on a standard post-mortem panel without a mass spectrometer.”

I closed my eyes for three seconds, feeling an icy rage settle deep into my bones.

Adrian hadn't just tried to steal the company; he had spent eight months slowly, systematically assassinating my father in his own bed, watching him grow weaker, watching him lean heavier on his cane, smiling while pouring his morning tea.

“Who prescribed it?” I demanded, opening my eyes.

“Dr. Kenneth Vance,” Marcus replied. “Donald Vance’s younger brother. Chief of Cardiology at Manhattan Central Hospital.”

“Where is he?”

“He boarded an emergency private charter out of Teterboro two hours after Adrian was arrested on your lawn,” Marcus said grimly. “Flight destination: Zurich. From Zurich, we believe he’s connecting to an unlisted private airstrip in the Cayman Islands.”

“He won’t make the connection,” I said, picking up my phone and dialing a private direct line to the Federal Aviation Administration’s international division.

“Clara, we don’t have an international red notice issued yet,” Marcus warned. “The Department of State is still processing the emergency extradition request.”

“We don’t need an extradition request,” I said into the phone as the line connected. “Hello, Director Hayes? This is Clara Montgomery. I am calling to exercise the immediate emergency repossession clause on Tail Number November-Seven-Zero-Four-Alpha.”

Marcus looked at me, stunned. “You own his plane?”

I offered a thin, lethal smile. “My father’s logistics subsidiary holds the master lease on eighty percent of the corporate jets operating out of Teterboro. Kenneth Vance’s charter company was ninety days behind on their lease payments. I just triggered the default clause.”

Within twenty minutes, Swiss aviation authorities, acting on an international asset recovery lien filed by Montgomery Aviation, ordered the private jet to divert and touch down at London Heathrow for emergency mechanical inspection.

The moment Kenneth Vance stepped onto British soil, the Metropolitan Police, alerted by a tip-off from Marcus Cross’s overseas liaison, detained him under an international provisional arrest warrant for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit corporate homicide.

By midnight, Dr. Vance had cracked under interrogation.

Facing life imprisonment in an American federal penitentiary, he signed a comprehensive sworn confession implicating Richard Sterling, Adrian Sterling, and Donald Vance in a five-year conspiracy involving corporate espionage, illicit pharmaceutical testing, and three separate executive ‘accidents’ that had cleared the path for the Sterling merger.

The house of cards wasn't just falling.
