Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

The morning sun filtered through the tall arched windows of the Coral Gables villa, casting long golden patterns across the polished hardwood floors.
Clare sat at the breakfast island, sipping a cup of dark, rich espresso that Maria had prepared, while reviewing her onboarding paperwork for the hospital. Across from her, little Maya was busy feeding pieces of scrambled egg to her battered gray rabbit, completely unbothered by the complexities of adult life.
Her phone buzzed beside her coffee cup.
It wasn’t Dante this time. It was an email notification from her bank.
Clare opened it, and her breath caught.
The security deposit and first month’s rent for a modest two-bedroom apartment near Coconut Grove—which she had applied for the week before—had been refunded in full, accompanied by a polite notice stating that the unit had been withdrawn from the rental market due to sudden structural renovations.
Coincidence? Clare thought, narrowing her eyes.
Ten minutes later, her phone rang. Dante’s name flashed across the screen.
“Did you do this?” Clare asked the moment she swiped to answer, dispensing with any polite greetings.
On the other end, Dante’s deep voice was entirely unrepentant. “Good morning to you too, Clare. Did I do what?”
“Don’t play innocent with me, Dante Salvatore. The apartment on Coconut Grove. The landlord just canceled my lease.”
“It’s not safe,” Dante replied smoothly, his tone shifting into absolute authority. “The building has an open parking garage, inadequate window locks on the ground floor, and a single entry point facing a public street. If Richard or any of his associates decided to look for you in Miami, that would be the first place they’d check.”
“I am perfectly capable of finding my own apartment,” Clare snapped, feeling a familiar flare of defensive independence. “You cannot just rewrite my life whenever it suits your security protocols!”
“I didn’t rewrite your life, Clare. I protected it,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a softer, persuasive register. “The house I bought in Coral Gables has a private gate, an advanced perimeter alarm, and a secure courtyard where Maya can play without a single care in the world. Move in with us. Not as a prisoner, and not as a dependent. Move in as my partner.”
Clare stared across the sunny kitchen.
She wanted to fight him. She wanted to yell at him for taking away her choices, for moving the goalposts, for acting like an alpha protector who assumed he knew what was best.
And yet... as she looked down at the safe, sunlit villa around her, and thought about the terrifying alternative of fighting Richard’s legal team alone, she realized something profound.
For seven years, she had fought every battle by herself. It was exhausting.

“You’re infuriating,” Clare whispered into the phone.
“I’ve been told that by better men than you, tesoro,” Dante murmured, a low rumble of amusement in his chest. “Pack your bags. Vince is sending a car at noon.”
