Chapter 8 - The Siege of Lake Michigan

The attack came at 2:14 in the morning.
The Moretti family, realizing that Nathan was systematically dismantling their shipping operations and preparing to present evidence of their crimes to federal authorities, launched a desperate, full-scale assault on the Blackwell estate.
The sound of shattering glass and heavy gunfire echoed through the north wing of the mansion.
I instantly threw myself out of bed, ran into Ethan’s adjacent suite, and pulled the boy out of his sleep.
"Vivi? What's that sound?" Ethan asked, rubbing his sleepy eyes, frightened by the muffled pops echoing through the floorboards.
"It's okay, sweetheart," I whispered urgently, wrapping him in a heavy blanket and picking him up in my arms. "We're going to play another game. The quiet mouse game."
I carried Ethan quickly into the master study, where Nathan had installed a reinforced panic room behind the main bookshelf.
As I reached the study doors, two armed men in dark tactical gear burst into the hallway from the grand staircase!
"There's the kid!" one of them shouted, raising an automatic rifle!
Fear paralyzed my limbs for half a second.
BANG! BANG!
Two crisp gunshots rang out from behind me, and both attackers collapsed to the polished floor.
Nathan stepped out from the shadows of the master bedroom, holding a black custom pistol, his chest bare, his arms covered in dark ink, his eyes burning with lethal fury.
"Into the room! Now!" Nathan yelled, grabbing my arm and pulling us both into the study.
He struck a hidden biometric keypad behind the wall sconce, and the heavy mahogany bookshelf slid open, revealing a thick steel security door.
Nathan shoved me and Ethan inside the small, brightly lit room stocked with communications gear and medical supplies.
"Nathan, come inside!" I pleaded, holding Ethan tightly against my chest.
Nathan looked at us from the doorway, his pistol raised.
"They're inside the house, Vivi," Nathan said, his voice deadly calm. "If I close this door from the inside, they'll surround the perimeter and set the mansion on fire. I have to clear the floor until Marco's backup arrives."
"No! You can't go out there alone!" I cried out, reaching for his hand.
Ethan reached out his small hand too, tears streaming down his face. "Daddy! Don't go!"
Nathan froze. He looked down at his son's outstretched hand, then up at my terrified eyes.
For eight months, Nathan Blackwell had been a ghost in his own home—a man driven solely by vengeance, business, and guilt. But in that fraction of a second, looking at the boy who could walk again and the woman who had brought light back into his broken life, Nathan made his choice.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out his master security keycard, and tossed it to me.

"Lock it from the inside, Vivi," Nathan said softly, offering a rare, breathtakingly beautiful smile. "I'm not dying tonight. I have too much to live for."
He hit the manual lock button on the exterior frame, and the heavy steel door slid shut, sealing us in complete safety as the sounds of battle raged on outside.
