Chapter 2 - The Sound of Breaking Bone

The drive home was conducted in a silence so dense it felt physical.

Inside the sleek interior of Evan’s luxury sedan, the air conditioner blew cold, but Claire’s skin burned with a fever of humiliation and betrayal. She stared fixedly out the passenger window, watching the blur of the afternoon traffic, her mind racing through the wreckage of what used to be her life. She expected lies. She expected the classic, pathetic excuses: It’s not what it looks like, she’s just a colleague, you’re imagining things. She even braced herself for accusations—that she had somehow driven him to it, that she was paranoid, hysterical, unhinged.

What she did not expect was the complete absence of speech. Evan didn't utter a single word. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently beneath his temple, and his knuckles on the steering wheel were bleached white.

When they pulled into the driveway of their modern suburban home, Evan didn’t wait for Claire to unbuckle. He slammed the car in park, killed the engine, and burst out of his door. Before Claire could even push her own door open, he was standing there, yanking it wide with a force that rattled the hinges.

"Get out," he snarled, his voice stripped of every pretense of the polished corporate gentleman he played for the world.

"Evan, don't you dare—" Claire started, stepping out onto the driveway.

Before she could finish the sentence, Evan lunged forward.

The second the heavy front door of the house closed behind them, locking them safely away from the prying eyes of the neighborhood, Evan’s restraint snapped entirely. With a brutal shove, he drove his open palms square into Claire’s chest, sending her flying backward across the entryway.

Her back slammed violently against the reinforced plaster of the front hallway wall.

Bang.

A blinding flash of white-hot agony exploded across Claire’s vision, robbing her lungs of air. For a terrifying second, the world spun on its axis. She tried to gasp, to draw breath into her collapsing chest, but a sharp, agonizing stab radiated outward from her ribs, making every micro-movement feel like swallowing shards of jagged glass.

"You absolute psycho," Evan snarled, towering over her as she slid weakly down the wall, clutching her side. "Do you have any idea who that woman was? Do you know what kind of contract she represents for my firm? And you humiliated me in front of her! In public!"

"You... you were cheating on me," Claire gasped out, her voice a thin, wheezing rasp as tears of pure pain and fury leaked from her eyes. "You brought your mistress to a public restaurant—"

"Shut up!" Evan roared, his face contorting into an ugly, unrecognizable mask of rage.

He didn't offer a hand to help her up. Instead, as Claire tried to shift her weight to protect her throbbing side, Evan’s boot kicked out, and he struck her again. A second, heavier blow landed squarely against her ribs.

A sickening, unmistakable crunch echoed through the quiet foyer.

The pain that followed was unlike anything Claire had ever experienced. It wasn't just a bruise; it felt as though her internal organs were being pierced by daggers. She collapsed entirely onto the hardwood floor, curling into a tight, shivering ball, gasping frantically for oxygen that wouldn't come.

Later, in the sterile fluorescent light of an emergency room or under the calm examination of a physician, the diagnosis would be clinical and precise: three fractured ribs, severe internal bruising, and acute trauma.

Right now, however, there was no hospital. There was only Evan, standing over her like an executioner who had just finished a dirty job.

He didn't look panicked. He didn't look remorseful. He looked disgusted.

"An ambulance?" Evan muttered to himself, answering a question Claire hadn't even asked. "No. If I call an ambulance, the police get involved. Word gets out. My career is finished."

With chilling, mechanical callousness, Evan bent down, grabbed Claire by the collar of her blouse, and dragged her unceremoniously across the hardwood floor toward the dark, recessed doorway leading down to the basement.

Claire tried to scratch, to fight back with what little strength remained in her limbs, but every movement sent white-hot lightning bolts of agony through her chest.

"Evan... please..." she choked out, blood tasting copper-sweet on her tongue.

"Reflect," Evan said coldly, his voice devoid of a single human emotion as he dumped her roughly onto the cold, dusty concrete floor at the bottom of the basement stairs. "Think about what happens when you embarrass me in front of people who actually matter."

He slammed the heavy wooden basement door shut.

The deadbolt turned with a heavy, final sound. The interior plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness.
