Chapter 53 - The Breach at the Threshold

"Who are you?" I demanded, my knuckles whitening around the heavy receiver. "And what did you do to my father?"

A dry, whistling chuckle echoed from the earpiece. "I gave your father forty years to prove he was something more than a sponge. He failed. Just as your mother failed. Just as that screeching vanity project, your sister, failed. Every dollar you earned, Clara, every utility bill you paid, every mortgage payment you salvaged while they spit in your face—it was a test of endurance. And you passed."

"A test?" Julian stepped up beside me, ripping the receiver from my fingers and shouting into the mouthpiece. "Who the hell are the men cutting through the hatch right now, Vance? Answer me!"

A dull *whump* shook the ceiling. Flakes of whitewash fluttered down like snow onto the mahogany desk. Above us, the blue-white hiss of a magnesium lance flared through the seam of the hatch, dripping molten slag onto the terrazzo floor twenty feet below.

"The men above are collectors, officer," the grandfather’s voice came back smoothly, audible through the phone's speaker. "When you borrow money from the wrong syndicate to build a seaside dynasty, they hold the notes for generations. Your father took thirty million from them to keep his failed shipping line afloat. He pledged you as the guarantee."

Julian went rigid. "Clara was the collateral?"

"Of course," Arthur Vance answered. "The only person in that family who knew how to balance a ledger. Now, open the second safe behind the third filing cabinet, Clara. Take the bearer bonds and the manifests. If you let them take the books, your life won't be worth the ink on an overdue notice."
