Chapter 8 - The Gathering Storm

Moving Sarah and Lily to the Westchester estate didn't go unnoticed by the surviving captains of the Moretti syndicate.

In the underworld, weakness—or what appeared to be weakness—was an invitation to slaughter. Word quickly spread that the great Adrian Moretti, paralyzed from the waist down and grieving his dead family, had suddenly installed a young widow and a toddler in his fortress.

Two days after the move, my top remaining capos—men with blood on their hands and ambition in their eyes—requested an audience in the grand study.

Viktor wheeled me behind the mahogany desk, his hand resting reassuringly near his holster.

The heavy oak doors opened, and three senior capos—Vince, Sal, and Frankie—stepped into the room. They didn't look down with the customary deference. Their eyes were hard, calculating, and restless.

"Adrian," Vince began, acting as their spokesman. "We hear rumors from the staff. You’ve turned the estate into a nursery. A civilian woman and a kid living under our roof?"

I didn't blink. I kept my gaze fixed on them, cold and steady. "Is there a problem with how I run my house, Vince?"

"It’s not just your house, boss," Sal chimed in, stepping forward. "It’s the syndicate headquarters. The Maroni family in Brooklyn is moving in on our shipping lanes, and the union bosses in New Jersey are getting restless because you haven't been seen in public for a month. And now... you're playing domestic hero?"

"Marcus is dead," Frankie added, his voice dripping with veiled threat. "You haven't named a replacement. The men are losing confidence. They want to know if you're still fit to lead, or if it's time for a change of command."

The challenge was out in the open. No more whispers. No more indirection. They thought the man in the wheelchair was broken, ripe for a coup.

I let out a slow, cold breath.

"You think because I can't walk, I can't pull a trigger?" I asked softly, my voice cutting through the silence like a razor.

I pressed a button on the underside of the desk.

Click. Click. Click.

Concealed ceiling ports slid open all around the study, revealing automated, motion-tracking tactical turrets trained directly on the chests of the three capos. At the same time, Viktor and four armed enforcers stepped out from the shadows of the bookshelves, their assault rifles raised.

Vince, Sal, and Frankie went completely rigid, the color draining from their faces.

"I built this empire with my bare hands," I continued, leaning forward in my chair, my eyes burning with lethal intensity. "I survived bullets, betrayal, and the bomb that took my wife and daughter. And you three think you can walk into my study and question my throne because I brought an innocent child into a safe home?"

"Adrian—boss—wait—" Vince stammered, raising his hands.

"If any one of you ever forgets who owns this city," I whispered, "the last thing you'll see before you join Marcus in the ground will be the red laser dot on your forehead."

Silence stretched for ten agonizing seconds. They could feel the cold breath of death pressing against their skin.

"We understand, boss," Sal choked out, his voice trembling. "Absolute loyalty. To the end."

"Get out of my sight," I commanded.

They turned and fled the study in a panicked stampede, leaving me alone in the quiet room once more.

I exhaled slowly, leaning back against the leather headrest. My heart was racing, my physical strength drained from the confrontation. I couldn't keep ruling this city through fear and iron forever. Sooner or later, a younger, faster wolf would slip past the defenses.

And I needed to make sure Sarah and Lily were entirely out of the line of fire when that day came.
