Chapter 7 - The Final Stand

"Open this door right now!" Victoria screamed from the hallway, her voice echoing through the building like a banshee's wail. The sound of her frantic blows rattled the picture frames hanging on the apartment walls.
Helena didn't panic. The momentary shock of fear dissolved instantly into pure, cold tactical focus. She sprinted down the hallway, grabbed her cell phone off the kitchen counter, and dialed 911 with lightning speed.
"911, what is your emergency?" the dispatcher answered instantly.
"Listen to me, my name is Helena Vance, 1420 Oakridge Avenue, Apartment 4B," Helena spoke in a rapid, authoritative whisper, keeping one eye on the front door as another heavy crash rattled the frame. "My former daughter-in-law, Victoria Vance—she's out on bail, she's at my apartment door, she's trying to break it down! She is unstable and she poses an immediate threat to my granddaughter!"
"Units are en route, priority one, stay on the line, ma'am—do you have a weapon?" the dispatcher asked calmly.
Helena’s gaze swept the kitchen, landing on a heavy iron skillet sitting on the stovetop. "I have a heavy cast-iron pan. I am not letting her in."
Crash.
The strike plate of the front door cracked down the middle. The deadbolt mechanism gave way with a sickening pop, leaving the door hanging precariously by its top hinge and the chain lock. Through the widening gap, Helena saw Victoria’s wild, bloodshot eyes staring through the slit, her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You can't hide her from me, Helena!" Victoria shrieked, shoving her arm through the gap, her fingers clawing frantically at the air, trying to reach the chain lock. "She's mine! She's my flesh and blood!"
Helena didn't hesitate. Gripping the heavy cast-iron skillet by its handle with both hands, she raised it high above her head and brought it down with full, unsparing force directly onto Victoria’s outstretched wrist.
A sharp crack echoed through the foyer, followed by a piercing, agonizing shriek of pain. Victoria pulled her arm back instantly, clutching her broken wrist to her chest, sobbing hysterically as blood and bruises bloomed beneath her sleeve.
"The next one goes between your eyes, Victoria!" Helena roared, standing tall in the doorway, the heavy skillet raised and ready for another strike. "Get out of this building before I finish what I started!"
Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder by the second, their red and blue strobes painting the apartment windows in frantic flashes of color.
Outside the door, Victoria let out a ragged, hateful sob. "This isn't over, Helena! You hear me? This isn't over!" she choked out, her footsteps stumbling backward down the hallway, dragging her broken arm as she fled toward the emergency stairwell.
Helena lowered the skillet, her hands trembling slightly as the adrenaline rush began to fade, leaving her weak and breathless. She kept the phone pressed to her ear.

"Police are pulling into the parking lot now, ma'am," the dispatcher’s voice said softly. "Are you and the child safe?"
"We're safe," Helena whispered, sliding down the kitchen wall until she sat flat on the floor, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "We're safe."
