Chapter 10 - A Life Restored

Six months later, summer had fully arrived in Columbus.
The two-acre lawn behind the craftsman house was vibrant green, surrounded by blooming wildflowers and thick, leafy trees. The sunny back patio featured a sturdy wooden dining table, a outdoor grill, and a set of comfortable lounge chairs.
In the backyard, Ethan had built a wooden play set with a slide and swings. Lily was swinging happily, her laughter ringing out across the quiet yard as Ethan pushed her higher into the air.
Emily sat at the patio table, sipping iced tea and watching them. Her life had transformed into something beautifully quiet, stable, and fulfilling. Without the drama of her mother and sister, her days were peaceful and full of purpose.
She had heard through a mutual acquaintance months ago that Diane and Robert’s marriage had undergone a severe fracture after the confrontation on her porch. Robert had moved into a separate apartment, unable to endure the endless accusations and hostility, while Lauren remained living at home, caught in the bitter storm she had helped create. But those details belonged to a different world—a world Emily had left behind forever.
"Mommy! Look how high I can go!" Lily called out, waving her arm from the swing set.
"I see you, sweetie! Be careful!" Emily called back, her heart swelling with warmth.
Ethan gave Lily one last soft push, then walked over to the patio table, taking a seat beside Emily. He took her hand in his, interlocking his fingers with hers.
"Happy?" Ethan asked, looking into her eyes with deep affection.
Emily leaned her head against his shoulder, watching the warm afternoon sunlight filter through the leaves of the oak trees, listening to the joyful sound of her daughter’s giggles filling the air.

"More than happy," Emily whispered, squeezing his hand firmly. "We built a real home. A place where our daughter will never have to doubt her worth."
The breeze rustled through the trees, carrying the sweet scent of summer grass. The past was finally quiet, the shadows had vanished, and the future ahead was entirely theirs to write.
