Chapter 6 - The Golden Daughter Falls

Melissa Halbrook was twenty-seven years old and had never worked a forty-hour week in her life.

She called herself an "interior design consultant" and an "influencer," though her Instagram account had fewer than four thousand followers, mostly consisting of bots and teenage girls commenting on her curated outfits.

Her entire lifestyle was an illusion maintained by Nathan’s corporate expense accounts and an authorized user card on my personal platinum credit line—a card Nathan had begged me to give her two years ago when she was supposedly "transitioning between jobs."

*"She’s my little sister, Em,"* Nathan had whined back then. *"She just needs a safety net while she builds her client portfolio. You make partner money. What's an extra thousand a month to you?"*

I had never audited the statements closely; I had simply paid the balance automatically, trusting my husband.

That trust was now a crime scene.

At two o'clock on Thursday afternoon, Melissa arrived at an upscale boutique in downtown Portland. She had selected two designer handbags, a pair of cashmere coats, and three bottles of imported perfume—totaling $8,400.

She walked up to the counter, handed over the shiny metal platinum card bearing her name, and offered her signature patronizing smile to the sales clerk.

"I’m in a bit of a rush," she told the cashier. "Wrap the coats in garment bags, please."

The cashier swiped the card.

*Declined.*

Melissa frowned, her smile tightening. "Try it again. Your machine must be malfunctioning."

The cashier swiped it a second time.

*Declined: Card Canceled by Issuer.*

"I’m sorry, ma'am," the cashier said politely, handing the card back. "It says the account has been closed due to fraudulent activity."

Melissa’s face turned an ugly, blotchy red. "That is impossible! My brother runs Halbrook Logistics! This card has an unlimited spending cap! Run it manually!"

"I can't do that, ma'am. The terminal says 'Do Not Honor - Confiscate Card.'"

Before Melissa could begin the screaming match she had perfected through years of watching Patricia terrorize retail workers, two plainclothes detectives from the Multnomah County Financial Crimes Unit stepped up to the counter.

"Melissa Halbrook?" the female detective asked, flashing a gold badge.

Melissa froze, her designer sunglasses slipping down her nose. "Who wants to know?"

"Detective Miller, County Financial Crimes," the officer said. "We have an active warrant for your arrest regarding third-degree grand larceny and unauthorized use of a commercial credit instrument totaling $42,600 over the past eighteen months."

"What?!" Melissa shrieked, backing away toward a display of silk scarves. "That’s my sister-in-law’s card! She gives me permission! Nathan gave me the card!"

"Nathan Halbrook is not the primary account holder, Ms. Halbrook," the detective said calmly, producing a pair of stainless steel handcuffs. "Emily Vance is. And Ms. Vance filed a formal affidavit this morning stating that you were never authorized to use that account for personal luxury purchases, trips to Mexico, or spa memberships, and that your authorized user status was obtained via forged documentation."

"This is a mistake!" Melissa wailed, her voice echoing through the silent, horrified boutique as other wealthy shoppers stopped to stare. "Mom! Call my mom! You can't put handcuffs on me! Nathan! Somebody call Nathan!"

"Hands behind your back, Ms. Halbrook," the detective commanded, her tone dropping all pleasantry. "Do not resist, or we will add obstruction to the charges."

Ten minutes later, Melissa Halbrook was led out through the double glass doors of the boutique in handcuffs, head ducked, tears streaking her expensive foundation, directly past two local lifestyle bloggers who happened to be filming outside on the sidewalk.

Within forty-five minutes, the video of "Portland Socialite Melissa Halbrook Arrested for Credit Card Fraud" had three hundred thousand views on TikTok.

By the time Nathan found out, he was sitting in his lawyer’s office, trying to figure out how to avoid being evicted from his commercial warehouse.

The Halbrook empire wasn't just crumbling.
