Chapter 5 - The Digital Vault

The decryption progress bar crawled across my monitor in a brilliant emerald green.

Lines of cascading hexadecimal code reflected in my eyes as the primary directory unlocked. Grant’s arrogance was truly his downfall; he had used a custom-built script to auto-backup his illicit communications to a decentralized cloud node, failing to realize that the encryption key he chose was a derivation of an old password we used when we first bought our Bay Village house.

Access Granted.

A series of video files populated the screen. I clicked the first one, wearing my noise-canceling headphones.

The video opened with a clear, high-definition view of my own living room in the Bay Village house—months before the electrical fire. Grant was sitting on the couch, talking on a burner phone with an unknown voice.

“Don't worry about Mara,” Grant’s recorded voice laughed smoothly on screen. “She’s too wrapped up in her federal cases to notice her own bank accounts are being drained. Once we get her parents’ house signed over, we’ll liquidate everything and move the capital to the Caymans. If she gets suspicious, her mother knows how to handle her.”

My breath caught in my throat. My mother wasn't just defending Grant out of misplaced loyalty; she had been coached from the very beginning.

I clicked through the directories, unearthing deeper layers of betrayal. There were financial records showing that my parents’ retirement funds hadn't just been used for Grant’s margin calls—they had willingly invested in his illegal ransomware enterprise, hoping to double their wealth before retirement. They had gambled their entire livelihood on a criminal syndicate, and when the money dried up, they welcomed us into their home not to shelter me, but to keep me under surveillance.

My office door swung open without warning. Rafael walked in, holding two fresh cups of coffee and a printed transcript.

"You look like you just saw a ghost," Rafael noted, setting a cup down.

"Worse," I whispered, turning the monitor toward him. "It wasn't an accident that we moved into my parents' house after the apartment fire. They orchestrated it. My mother helped Grant monitor my Bureau case schedule so he could rifle through my evidence files while I was at the field office."

Rafael’s jaw tightened. He read the transcript lines detailing my mother's active participation in Grant’s financial deception. "That changes the legal landscape completely. They aren't just panicked accessories. They are co-conspirators."

"Draft the arrest warrants for my parents," I said steadily, feeling a cold, calm resolve wash over me. "Let’s finish what we started."
