Chapter 20 - Fractured Allegiance

They emerged an hour later from a long-abandoned drainage horizontal adit near the southern base of Black Ridge.

The cold mountain air felt shockingly pure compared to the sulfur and cordite of the tunnels. They stood on a narrow ledge overlooking a logging road cut into the lower slope. Below them, through the pine canopy, Cole spotted an old forest service maintenance cabin and an aged Ford F-250 parked near an rusted aluminum equipment shed.

Cole set Nora down on a mossy boulder, leaning back against the cliff face to catch his breath. His tactical vest was soaked in sweat and dirt, and the old injury in his right knee was throbbing with a dull, vicious agony.

Nora looked up at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fierce determination. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the contractor's tactical radio Cole had salvaged earlier.

The channel was buzzing with broken transmissions.

"...Target’s last known vector was Level 4 drainage," Vance’s voice cut through the static, sounding irritated, stripped of its previous cool detachment. "He killed Miller and Davies. He collapsed the drift. Bring the bird down to the logging perimeter. If we cannot extract the biological asset intact, bring down the entire tree canopy with the 30mm cannon. The master keys cannot fall into federal custody."

Nora’s hand shook as she stared at the radio. "He's going to kill us both. Even if he can't get the key, he won't let me live."

"He's running out of time," Cole said, scanning the road below with his rifle optic. "A heavy gunship firing rockets in national forest territory triggers seismic and acoustic sensors at nearby military airbases. Vance has maybe fifteen minutes before the Oregon National Guard or Federal Air Marshals scramble jets to investigate the airspace. He’s getting sloppy, and sloppy men make fatal mistakes."

Cole knelt beside Nora. He took off his tactical harness, pulling a small roll of electrical tape and a field suture kit from his pouch.

"Nora, listen to me carefully," Cole said, looking directly into her eyes. "Vance thinks the only way to stop this data from transmitting is to kill you and recover the hardware. Is there a manual purge command for your spinal bridge? Something your father taught you?"

Nora swallowed hard, her jaw tightening. "My father... he gave me a phrase when he was in the hospice. He told me if Marcus ever became someone I didn't recognize, or if strangers came asking about his research, I had to whisper three words into my biometric voice-recognition monitor on my phone."

"What words?"

" *Exitus Acta Probat* ," she whispered. "The outcome justifies the deed. But Cole... if I trigger the purge, the neural bridge fries itself. The current will sever every connection to my motor implants. I’ll never walk again. Even with advanced therapy, the nerve damage will be irreversible. I’ll be paralyzed from the waist down forever."

Cole fell silent. He looked at the bruised, courageous woman before him. She had been pushed off a mountain by the man who had promised to love her. She had been hunted through the freezing wilderness like an animal. And now she was being asked to surrender any hope of physical recovery to save thousands of lives from an orbital weapons breach.

"You don't have to do it alone, Nora," Cole said softly, his voice devoid of the soldier's roughness. "Whatever happens after this, you won't be abandoned. I give you my word as a SEAL."

Suddenly, Ranger let out a savage, explosive bark, his body launching forward toward the edge of the tree line.

A high-caliber sniper round cracked through the air, punching a hole through the boulder six inches above Cole’s head.
