Chapter 9 - The Anniversary of Grace

Exactly one year to the day since that fateful dinner, our family gathered at Brennan’s Grill once again.
This time, we didn't sit in a secluded corner booth. We sat right at table twelve near the large glass window facing Congress Avenue, bathed in the warm, inviting light of the dining room.
Marcus, our favorite waiter, walked over with a wide, celebratory grin, carrying a tray filled with our favorite dishes—steaks, garlic fries, grilled chicken, and a massive plate of warm rolls.
“Happy anniversary, gentlemen,” Marcus said warmly, placing the dishes down with professional flair. “How are things looking on the home front?”
“Couldn't be better, Marcus,” I smiled, raising my glass of sparkling cider in a silent toast. “Couldn't be better.”
Connor looked out through the massive glass window onto the bustling sidewalk of Congress Avenue. A chilly autumn wind was blowing leaves across the concrete, and pedestrians in heavy coats hurried past, lost in their own evening routines.
Elliot noticed the direction of his gaze, reached across the table, and tapped Connor’s arm with his fork.
“Penny for your thoughts, soccer star?” Elliot grinned.
Connor turned back, a bright, confident smile illuminating his face. He looked down at the steaming plate of food in front of him, then up at me, and finally at Elliot.
“I was just thinking about where I was this time last year,” Connor said quietly, his voice steady and filled with profound gratitude. “I was cold, I was hungry, and I thought the whole world had forgotten I existed.”
I reached across the table, placing my hand over his, just as I had done in the dark apartment on Industrial Way.
“The world hadn't forgotten you, Connor,” I said softly. “You were just waiting for the right people to open their eyes and refuse to look away.”
May you like
Connor squeezed my hand back tightly, his eyes shining with bright, unshakeable hope.
“And you’ll never have to worry about being forgotten again,” Elliot added firmly, raising his glass of lemonade. “Ever.”
